Thomas Karsten was born in 1958 in Eisenach and grew up in Leipzig.
Since 2013 he has lived and worked in a former church in Uffenheim close
to Würzburg.
After having worked in other artistic branches, he felt he became
appointed to photography at the age of 21. Since 1983 he has worked for
journals and magazines such as Stern, Art, Nerve (New York), Capital and
others. His first individual publication received the Kodak-Fotobuchpreis
in 1988. Thomas Karsten emerged internationally particularly through his
previous 17 photo books which are the results of the work on different
subjects of nude photography for years. He is now the most published
nude photographer in Germany. Occasinally he travels to broaden his
horizon, meet friends, and convince new women of the attraction of
photography. His nude photographs have been published in many
important international magazines and books, such as New Erotic
Photography (Los Angeles), Deep Inside (Lausanne), Masterpieces
of Erotic Photography (London), Nerve (San Francisco), BilderLust
(Heidelberg), Nudi (Milano), Erotic Photography (London), Il Nudo
(Firenze). He has participated in worldwide exhibitions together with
Helmut Newton and Allan Jones, for example, in the Galerie Les Larmes d’Eros
(Paris), The Erotic Art Museum (Hamburg), Kamera- und Fotomuseum
(Leipzig), and Galleria d’Arte Moderna (Bologna).
Thomas Karsten also works as a director of photography for film productions,
video clips, and corporate videos. He received the award “Best Cinematography”
for the film State Research Bureau, at the Pearl International Film Festival
2012 in Kampala, Uganda. As Director of Photography, he created this
film for the Ugandan film company Bish Films often using two cameras
running simultaneously. Since 2008 he spends several months during a
year working for photo and film projects in Africa.
In 2013 he received for these projects the the prestigious award, the
“Fotopreis der Michael Horbach Stiftung.”
