About Me

I'm Nigel Tissington, and I am the photographer at The Mill Photography Studios, in a fabulous antique mill building, which is about two hundred years old, in a pretty village, beside the Derwent River and weir in Darley Abbey, Derby, Derbyshire, UK

The Darley Abbey Mills are a World Heritage Site, so you’re surrounded by history and atmosphere as soon as you arrive

My studios, which have recently appeared on prime time television in the UK, are in Middle Mill. The North Photography Studio is forty feet long and has natural north window light, held so precious by artists through the centuries. With a range of flash lighting a black wall to shoot against and a long row of sash windows, you’ll find plenty of variation in the photography. The floor is made up of original dark tiles, with distressed textures, and colours of black, brown and dark greys to give really raw, authentic look.

The South Photography Studio benefits from sunshine (weather permitting!), casting patterns and shadows of the windows across the floor. Here you’ll find more lighting equipment and a large area painted white, which can be used either for the ever popular white background, or lit to bring up the textures of the original flaky plaster walls. The South Studio is sixty feet long and also has lots of photogenic character, with old wooden beams, flaking plaster walls, original tiled floors and creaking sash windows, making it a unique location

There is professional lighting (including a six by four foot soft box), a full-size wind machine, a mist machine, lighting effects filters, a dedicated carpeted make-up area with Hollywood style mirror, full-length mirror, changing area and all the other photography studio accessories that you'd expect

Apart from the large white background, and various coloured backdrops, we can use the original features of the mill in the photography shoots, to get a look which you simply won't see anywhere else. The features lead to a raw edgy fashion style, a slightly tough industrial urban feel, which I think is a great creative contrast to human beauty and form. This results in the studio being a super venue to get a mix of fashion and boudoir style into portfolios

There is a range of vintage industrial settings outside. I am also on the edge of the beautiful Darley Park, which is a rolling open green space with a weir and river, managed and natural woodlands and flower gardens

Around the corner is Nutwood Nature reserve, which opens up possibilities for shoots too

I have a long working association with a superb make-up artist, who is also a trained hairdresser, so she is expert at re-styling hair for different looks

The studio is also available for hire to other photographers, film makers, and for other events

So whether you’re a model needing to build a portfolio, some-one who would like a shoot for fun, or a photographer looking for a special location, please contact me to find out how I can help!
