The second Soybaby shot you have posted looks EXACTLY like something Kate O'Brien, aka eye candy for the broken hearted, would do.

okie. I was an agency shooter for quite a while, but stopped when they thought that my demand for at least a little money wasn't unrealistic. How do I separate the fetish in my portfolio from the excellent fashion/portfolio I've done. Mind you, mainstream folk are assholes and look for ways to rip you off. Should I have two portfolios?

My friend wrote a poem after it. I'll find that too.

I too have spent many an hour in front of this Rothko.  It's one of my favorites.  Perhaps this is you that I caught contemplating?

On Rafanan

Rafanan, again young and early in his career, is at the exciting point in an artist's life where we begin to see a fight with the cleavage of the relationship between the taught and the unknown. His work posits that a constant state of joie de vivre, mere composition and craft/technique, is impossible in that in the absence of the sensory experience, the sensual experience of life and the ability to cognitively appreciate and remember these experiences, is lost.
At times silly and maddening, the work is riddled with its own sexuality, becoming an envelope to a new age of post-trauma. Like inkhorn terms, wanting to be remembered and accepted and forgotten as teachers, the work is full of tension, anxiety, a sound of the orchestra tuning. Against calligraphy, a capture of how we begin to understand.

On Chauncey

Not too long ago, there seemed to be a fair amount of debate about photographers and models partaking in what was called "Urban". We didn't even talk so much about glamour then, it was a question of "If I'm 5'5" and can't be a fashion model, I'll do urban!" to which inevitably came the response, "Urban don't pay." There was a tacit understanding that Urban work was heirarchically subaltern to Fashion--without, it ought to be stressed, any overlap, which is a silly presumption, of course--to where women of color, hips larger than 35", and breasts were cast.

Chauncey's work is Urban. A definition of the term, actually. While there has always existed in art a vague idea of what is "good photography" and "bad photography" having much to do with concept, some definition of commodity production v. artistic process. What is truly glorious about Urban work, particularly Chauncey's direction, is that is creates an erasure of the notion that the ephemeral competes with the classic, that there is a difference between vernacular and the law.

Much like graffiti and its opposite (photography), the work both adds to and takes from its environs, momentous and challenging the original.

As to an earlier question about what constitutes a "real diptych"--my only assertion earlier was that it was not just throwing two pictures together--I commend the viewer to pay attention to the circles. It's a fine balance, without eschewing the requisite tension, where we go from left to right, Camera One to Camera Two.

Yes, but more often a spade is just a spade. Occam's Razor need not be violated 95% of the time.

I know...infact, fingers are incredibly sexy and a huge turn on, so I believe we should have to link to all pictures with them, since they are clearly secondary sexual characteristics.

Or, let's go buy a whole bunch of cheap Victoria's Secret bras and put them over all the exposed nipples in the Guggenheim. Museums: so not work safe.

Oh no, you can't pull that crap. The second you pulled a 180 on your "I wouldn't want to be a mod" belief, you became much more than the messenger. You became arbiter elegantiarum.....judge, jury, magistrate, queen, oligarch, and one of the powers that be.

You get everything that comes with it. ANd you don't get to weasel out of it.

We went up to the three snorting machines to caress their breasts. I lay along mine like a corpse on its bier, but I suddenly revived again beneath the steering wheel - a guillotine knife - which threatened my stomach. A great sweep of madness brought us sharply back to ourselves and drove us through the streets, steep and deep, like dried up torrents. Here and there unhappy lamps in the windows taught us to despise our mathematical eyes. `Smell,' I exclaimed, `smell is good enough for wild beasts!'

And we hunted, like young lions, death with its black fur dappled with pale crosses, who ran before us in the vast violet sky, palpable and living.

#  We want to glorify war - the only cure for the world - militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of the anarchists, the beautiful ideas which kill, and contempt for woman.
# We want to demolish museums and libraries, fight morality, feminism and all opportunist and utilitarian cowardice.
# We will sing of the great crowds agitated by work, pleasure and revolt; the multi-colored and polyphonic surf of revolutions in modern capitals: the nocturnal vibration of the arsenals and the workshops beneath their violent electric moons: the gluttonous railway stations devouring smoking serpents; factories suspended from the clouds by the thread of their smoke; bridges with the leap of gymnasts flung across the diabolic cutlery of sunny rivers: adventurous steamers sniffing the horizon; great-breasted locomotives, puffing on the rails like enormous steel horses with long tubes for bridle, and the gliding flight of aeroplanes whose propeller sounds like the flapping of a flag and the applause of enthusiastic crowds.

The oldest among us are not yet thirty years old: we have therefore at least ten years to accomplish our task. When we are forty let younger and stronger men than we throw us in the waste paper basket like useless manuscripts! They will come against us from afar, leaping on the light cadence of their first poems, clutching the air with their predatory fingers and sniffing at the gates of the academies the good scent of our decaying spirits, already promised to the catacombs of the libraries.

But we shall not be there. They will find us at last one winter's night in the depths of the country in a sad hangar echoing with the notes of the monotonous rain, crouched near our trembling aeroplanes, warming our hands at the wretched fire which our books of today will make when they flame gaily beneath the glittering flight of their pictures.

They will crowd around us, panting with anguish and disappointment, and exasperated by our proud indefatigable courage, will hurl themselves forward to kill us, with all the more hatred as their hearts will be drunk with love and admiration for us. And strong healthy Injustice will shine radiantly from their eyes. For art can only be violence, cruelty, injustice.

The oldest among us are not yet thirty, and yet we have already wasted treasures, treasures of strength, love, courage and keen will, hastily, deliriously, without thinking, with all our might, till we are out of breath.

Look at us! We are not out of breath, our hearts are not in the least tired. For they are nourished by fire, hatred and speed! Does this surprise you? it is because you do not even remember being alive! Standing on the world's summit, we launch once more our challenge to the stars!
