A very nice example of 'do what you can with what you got'. As an analogy to modeling, the message is "while it's very unlikely you'll get runway, fashion, or other 'retail media' jobs if you're 5' 5" or shorter, if you have any other skills, an open mind, and the will to succeed, then your height shouldn't be an impediment to becoming a professional (i.e. making your living as a) model..."
You know how many people call me "little one" at work? Everyone. It's kind of annoying. (I should reply to all my messages and emails in the future as Little One). I'm the shortest person I know. I wish I was at leat 4 inches taller (making me 5'4"). Anyone want to give me some height? lol

A quick shot to the groin of anyone calling you "little one" will probably hunch them over and make them shorter than you.....then you can call them "littler one" j/k
But, hey it worked for me. A friend at my gym who's slightly taller than me was giving me crap about it. He never saw it coming and for a few moments I stood taller than him J.
you guys are all forgetting that it is rad to be short because you can always buy clothes out of the little kid dept, and you are never to old to go in the playplaces at mcdonalds. get proud to be short!

Don't hate being short. You're HOT!! I know dozens of girls that are tall would swap their height to look as good as you do... Be thankful for what you do have.

Hmm, I'm 5 ft 6. I didn't think that was short, I thought it was average. Now, my mother in law, she's short (4 ft 10). Of course, most asian women are, so I guess that's normal, too, huh?
Try being short AND looking a lot younger than your true age...it can be fun at times (I used to get charged for a kid's meal at Denny's when I went out with my parents...at the age of 20!) Still, it can be a pain at times, too. I get tired of people asking me for my age, because I look so young. I can't even count how many times I've been carded, and I'm pushing 30 (well, 28 soon). I have had people think my kids are my siblings...that's always funny.
Just think of the pluses of being short, though...you don't have to duck to miss a chandelier, you are just tall enough for the fun rides at amusement parks but don't have to worry about being too tall....so on and so on...

The will to succeed might have to be qualified a bit. While it is possible to succeed against the odds it needs and IRON will, total determination, and the ability to be focused beyond normal. It also means that you will have to be twice as smart, twice as outgoing, twice as determined, twice as knowledgable, and doubly good at marketing yourself when you realize that all of your competition (be it in baskeball, modelling, or gymnastics (where short people rule)) are driven too and may have natural advantages over you.
You can be 5'5" and a basketball star but you'll have to be on your game way more than the guys that are 6'7" if you want to be competitive. On top of that, if the team finds a guy who is 6'7" and has the same basic skills...who wins the job?
This sounds like such a downer, I'm actually a big time believer in dreams...but then I also believe that dreams worth having are never easy.
Oh, by the way. For MY work I TOTALLY prefer short models! (under 5'6") I'll hire taller models, but the short onse work really well and make my job much easier.

Agreed. It won't come easy, but it is absolutely viable. The good news is that people who have a natural advantage that matches a requirement (i.e. height in the case of basketball) may not be quite as driven as those who don't have natural advantages built in. Applies to modeling, basketball, gymnastics, etc. Truth is, those ARE the exceptions to the rule. To overcome a natural DISadvantage is taking the hard road, no question about it.

The taller athlete with the mad skillz, naturally. However, the 5'5" athlete gets the job if he/she has mad skillz, charisma, and is attractive. A basketball star is different than a good (or even great) basketball player, and teams really like having basketball stars to sell their brand.

5'3 and below... 5'5-5'7 being kinda tall..5'8 for me is an odd number. 5'9-6ft is tall to me. Being extremely tall is actually very similar to being extremely short.."Do you play basketball?"..."are you a gymnasts??"...god I just wanna give people the pimphand sometimes..I DON'T PLAY BASKETBALL DAMN IT!!!!

I am 5'1" now, the same height that I was when I was 13. However, then I was the tallest girl in my class at school. Of course my school was in Japan and it was a very very long time ago <grin>
People are sometimes surprised when they meet me in real life, if they only know me through pictures. As a slim Oriental woman, I do not look short unless I am in shot with something that gives my height away.
I would not wish to be taller, as I am the perfect height to wear a kimono.

The bane of my existance...
My BF still thinks its funny I have to ask him to get things from the top shelf in the kitchen. He refuses to believe I can't reach up there (even when he catches me using the tongs to try and pull stuff down).

I used to hate being short, but I came to love it.
First I am comfortable in cars, in planes.
I can move quickly and with agility.
I can act like much more of a kid and less my age.
The only reason I didn't like it was because I thought it interferred with my athletic career. Now that I am older it doesn't matter anyway.
The other reason was, because women generally prefer tall men. But now I couldn't care less. If you carry yourself and present yourself properly it just really doesn't matter in your relationship with women.
