Hi I am looking for AA or Ethnic Model with wild colored hair. I am looking to dye my hair blue, purple and/or pink before fall. I already know bleaching the hair is damaging and so forth(especiall AA). If i Use manic panic or special effects do i have to bleach the hair first? ( i will go to the hair salon if i have to bleach it)

I want vibrant colors. I want to do this by this weekend. I am cutting all my hair off this fall (rihanna hair cut and color) and i want to go wild with it now! I been wanting this for a while. Thanks

oh yeah if you have picture PLEASE PLEASE post sad i can't find any. I did find one color i liked.. (raquel reed OMG LOVE HER HAIR!) But i won't go that far. Or i might just buy platinum blonde weave and dye it. hey..does that work!?

Hey! I'm european & trinidadian, my hair is curly and semi-coarse. I relax my hair as well as highlight it blonde (myself) and i have a tiny bit of breakage, but nothing really noticeable! It turned out well for me, i'm not bald, lol! However, everytime i go to get my hair trimmed EVERY technician is shocked that i still have hair on my head since i bleach AND relax it. I don't know if i just have exceptionally strong hair... or what... but i've never had any adverse effects from relaxing and bleaching it! And yes, with dark hair (as far as i know) you have to bleach it to get a bright color... but then again, i'm not a hair stylist! Just my 2cents!

Every time I dyed my hair blue, pink, orange, green, red, etc... I had to bleach it first.

EDIT: Also, I hated manic panic coloring.

My hair is curly and looks thick but is fairly thin.  I have bleached it platinum in streaks before and then colored the streaks with manic panic and other colors. But then again I am also not AA but Hawaiian, mostly.

The manic panic is SUPER TEMPORARY from my experience.

Also, depending on what color it may not come out exactly as you like it or you might have to re-color it often to keep it.
(ie., bleach blonde streaks with royal blue manic panic turned chlorine pool green when it started to fade out...not an attractive color at all).

They actually make very brightly colored clip-ins that I got at Sally Beauty and I LOVE them!! smile

I know I don't fit your description, but I may be able to shed some light.

In order to get the vibrant blue I had originally, they had to bleach out my mouse brown hair (otherwise the color would be muddy).

The best product for the vibrant colors that I have experienced has been Paul Mitchell's Ink line.

i don't know much about the manic panic brand but i do know that it is possible to dye human hair weaves. if you go into ayour local beauty supply that sells human hair they can probably tell you which brand, color and type you can dye

You will have to bleach your hair. It doesn't matter if you have AA hair or not because the chemicals don't change. If you're looking to weave your hair like you mentioned, maybe just buy pre colored hair because then it won't fade and there will be MUCH less damage.

If you do decide to color it, as far as the damage is concerned that depends on how light you bleach it. The colors that will need your hair to be pale blonde (translates to REALLY damaged) would be blue, turquoise, or bluish purples. One step down in damage is green or yellow, after that is orange, and finally (the least amount of bleaching required) red and the redder purples.

Also remember that even if you are cutting your hair short, hair only grown 1/2 per month on average so chances are it won't be entirely grown out by then.

I hope this helps!

PS. Be prepared for some crazy maintenance. Bright colors are not easy to keep up!

DYEING WITHOUT PRE-BLEACHING
Yes it is possible to have wild MANIC PANIC colored hair without bleaching as 11 year old Casey will attest. His mom, Krista, used Vampire Red Gel formula. She writes us: "We just washed and towel dried, applied the gel with a tint brush, and combed it through.we covered it with a plastic bag and left it on for about 2 hours...I was afraid of the mess he would make if I had let him sleep with it in. We did learn a cool trick to keep the color off our foreheads, etc....I used tape around the hairline (just some bandage tape that i got from my work at the animal hospital). Put the tape on your skin during the dying process. When you're done, peel the tape off and you've got clean non-stained skin...". Krista really knows her stuff when it comes to MANIC PANIC Hair Color as you can see from her photo.

DYEING WITHOUT PRE-BLEACHING
All the way from romantic Rome Italy comes a tip from this dyehard, the lovely Gemma. She sports waist-length UNBLEACHED Vampire™ Red hair. She writes us: "I used an entire jar of Vampire™ Red cream dye on unbleached hair after having washed it. Then I pinned the hair to the top of my head, covered it with a plastic bag, and left the dye on for two hours, applying heat with a hairdryer avery now and then. The result is perfect and I didn't need any extra help at all!". (See her also on our Best of the Best Vampire Red page.)
NOW, THAT'S WHAT WE CALL A STUNNING HIGHLIGHT!

That only worked because they had a medium brown even dark blonde hair and what should have been RED came out more muted. Plus, since they were reds, they didn't need as much lightening. If they had tried to do that with a blue or a green or even a purple, they would have been in the salon crying the next day... trust me... I've seen it a million times and it's always right before school starts haha. If you want vibrancy you have to bleach. Otherwise it will muddy up the colors and you won't get that pop that you want. Think of mixing paint.

Brown + Blue= Mud blue

Brown + Green= Mud green

Brown+ Purple=Muddy purple

I'm sure you get the drift ;-)

You do have to bleach it, but I just got bright pink highlights put in my black hair, and she didn't bleach it to blond or anything. It was lighter at the top near the roots, but the ends were kind of an orange-y brown. And it went on just fine. It faded really fast, but I just put manic panic over it a few days ago and it still looks great. And yeah, I'd say definitely go to a salon to have your hair bleached.

if you want it wild and bright yes it must be bleached... lame i kno just be careful.
DO NOT USE MANIC PANIC!!! yes they have cool colors but they bleed too easily. its always all over everything.
i use punky color. for the green= lagoon blue and yellow and for the pink... well i use their bright pink.
the pink is a pain in the ass but i love the color and i always get compliments. it bleeds like manic but the blue/yellow/green have yet to bleed on to towels and clothing. the pink only does it when hair is wet...
i have pics of my hair with the pink in my port on here...
heres more of just blue and green.

I'm not a model, but I use to experiment quite a bit with my hair color. And the one time I bleached to do a fire engine red in my hair, the hair eventually broke, and badly (I have very thick semi-coarse hair) and to add insult to injury, it was in the front of my hair! LOL

Then once my hair was back to life and healthy again, I decided to experiment with Maniac Panic (without bleaching) I used their vampire red. It added a lovely red tint to my dark hair (black brown) HOWEVER; IT TOOK FOREVER to fade out and it destroyed many a pillow case and tops with it. Not at all what I expected since I did not bleach my hair before hand and it was not permanent dye.

My 2 cents is to try and preserve the health of your hair first and foremost. It might look great while it lasts, but consider your daily routine. Do you apply a lot of heat to your hair? Do you get it relaxed? Etc.

rrrrrr...just had a long post and some error popped up.
Anyway THANK YOU EVERYONE! i really appreciate you taking the time and letting me know. I ruled out manic panic between this site and yahoo answers.
I also think imma just buy weave for now. The bleach scares me. I don't think i would keep up with the maintenance of it. A relaxer and bleach sounds horrifying! lol. I love the weave in the pic above. I found this helpful too because we are the same complexion! So I though that was pretty cool. I wish i could give you all a big hug. You made my day! (trust me...my days havent been great lately!) smile

I have very thick , course curly hair! Not (AA) but very similair! You do have to bleach your hair to get the edgier colors to really scream. There are bleaches that are less harmful than others. Not that ANY bleaching isn't harmful...but you can lessen the degree of damage done. If you plan on doing it yourself go to your local Sally's beauty store and ask about blue bleaches for dark hair. They process up to 5 levels....and will do less harm to your hair. Use a 20 to 30 vol. developer. NEVER use a 40 unless you really know what your doing.  Using any hair bleach with a 40 vol. developer has a good chance of really screwing up your hair!  If your hair is brown to dark brown to black...if you can get your hair past the "orange stage" to a yellower color...the semi permanent color will still come out.   Bleached white hair is the optimal color...but that takes multiple bleachings and can again screw up your hair!   I have used MANY semi permanent crazy colors, but I LOVE Manic Panic colors! They are vegetable based colors so they condition your hair and there are many ways to get longer life from the colors. They also have AMPLIFIED versions of all their colors that last much. much longer!  The trick to keeping your hair in good condition no matter what you do to it is condition the hell out of it! Try to wash your hair every other day or longer... air dry when you don't have anything special planned ....watch your diet ..and use shampoos and conditioners for colored hair and that DO NOT contain parabens...urea...or sulfites!  Good luck!

You have to bleach it. I've had blue hair for almost a year.
You HAVE to bleach it. You can do damage control with conditioning treatments.
I use manic panic, but I mix colors. I've never had a problem with manic panic. Avoid shampoo entirely and your color will hardly fade at all. Don't use hot water  when you wash your hair to keep the color from running in the shower.

jamaican (photog)
when i had purple hair, i had to bleach it. it faded very quickly.

if you just wants streaks, you can go an easier route.

if you have relaxed hair, i would personally just bleach a track or extension and sew/braid it in.

if it's unrelaxed hair, you can get curly exentions, bleach it, color it, and sew/braid it in.

easier to maintain, easier on your hair (we over-process our hair enough as it is) and if you hate it, you can take it out.

Manic panic is THE ABSOLUTE WORST color to get out of your hair once you are tired of it! LOOK OUT! make sure it's a color you want for a very long time! and yes you have to bleach your hair.  There are other vibrant color brands to use I would come to the salon to get it done smile

+1 tongue
You must must must bleach and I reccomend toning after bleaching to get all the yellow/orange tones out.
Use protein treatments for your hair! I have never had a problem with bleaching except for the time I over bleached and my hair melted.
I don't mind manic panic. I have never had a problem with fast fading. I fyed my hair hot hot pink after a bleach and tone and the colour stayed extremely vibrant for over a month. Same with the atomic turquoise and purple haze. I have alot of friends that use manic panic and love it.
Other favorites are La Riche and SFX (special effects).
I also had no problem shampooing my manic panic coloured hair.

I am glad that you said that you would go to a pro if you were to get it bleached.  Althought I know many stylists won't want to bleach african american hair if it is relaxed.  There are two types of relaxers, hydroxide based and thyo based.  Hydroxide based relaxers, those typically used on AA hair is very harsh and will sometimes react with a bleach and will destroy the hair.  Usually I make my clients choose one or the other.  I have seen one girl get her hair bleached even though her hair was relaxed but we used Loreal Platinium in the pink container, it is no ammonia and is very slow and gentle (as far as a bleach can be of course)

To get the colors vibrant like out of the bottle they need to be put on white or near white hair, which is often times very difficult to get aa hair to lift to since you have very strong orange and red undertones, and those undertones are very difficult to break through especially when using a gentle bleach.

Even for myself, I used to have bleached white hair, and it is very coarse and wavy, I only bleached my hair even though I really would have liked to relax it.  But as far as colors, I leave that to my extensions, and that is what I usually do with my clients as well.  For my hair I just colored my hair black but I put pink clip in extensions underneath made from human hair that I colored pink myself.  This way I can destroy that hair and then throw it away and make new ones.

Just a thought, but why Manic Panic? It's possibly the worst quality crazy color dye I've ever used.

I only use Special FX for bright vibrant colors. My hair is a natural medium blonde and I dye it with a mix of Hot Lava and Napalm Orange to get a bright bright orange that fades to natural redhead color.

I order it from amphigory.com, they have a lot of photo samples of all the colors over bleached and non-bleached hair.

If you have naturally dark hair, you WILL have to bleach. Use gentle bleach (20 volume or less developer), and wait longer, you'll get cleaner, healthier results. Never trust a hairstylist that uses more than 20 volume with bleach, it's extremely damaging.

I was in a hair show for JOICO, and they painted my hair green and blue, a peacock thing going on there.  I swear by this brand now because it didn't start fading until like 5 months later.  It was a show I did in aug 10, and there was still some green in my hair last week before I dyed it black.
