I don't consider myself a model, it's just a hobby for me, but I love it.
I have Asperger, a form of Alopecia and I had Hip Dysplasia, I won't let it keep me down!

Hip Dysplasia was fixed with 2 operations when I was little, but it's still a weak spot for me. Scars are visible at my bikini line, I'm not as flexible as most people, I can't even bend over and touch my toes tongue
It also means that I have trouble walking the day after a busy day at a shoot. But I know that happens, so I schedule a relax day after big_smile

I have Androgenetic Alopecia, which means my hair is really thin. I have a small bald spot at my forehead. For shoots I either make a ponytail and use brown eyeshadow to hide the spot, use a lot of hairspray to make something of my hair, and recently I bought a hairpiece. It really boosted my confidence, I have so much hair all of a sudden big_smile

Doing photoshoots is actually good for my Asperger. It can practice my social skills and it helps me to become more independent.

I  am a model that has a disability. I walk with crutches on a normal basis. I have met only maybe one or two photographers who didnt' like it. Hail to modeling for all! As long as you can make the pictures look pretty, have fun with it and the photographers and they like to work with you. I dont' see the problem

I think it made them uncomfortable knowing I use crutches. If they had asked for my references my photographers would've told them I just toss them to the side and pose. smile They are more for distance walking and balance when walking.

What about hearing aids? I have hearing aids so far I've never had any photographers have a problem with them, but I fear that it may happen in the future. If I have my hair down, you can't see them, but it its up, they are visible. I could take them out, but I would have a lot difficulty hearing the photographer...

Would you ask someone to remove their hearing aids in a shoot if they were visible?

I think it depends on what the shoots for....and the models comfort level of course. I've had photographers ask me to shoot with my crutches and I honestly refuse. I think as long as the hearing aids dont' make the photographer or model uncomfortable I can't imagine them asking to remove them. I've lucked out with the photographers I've worked with.

I definitely think modeling is open to EVERYONE... beauty is everywhere and not limited to any one type of person....
It is sad if people think that just because someone is disabled they cannot be a model... not true in my book!

I'm a disabled model as well.  I've been working for over 2 years now and I love it.  I've worked with Wilhelmina and am currently with a casting agency in NY. So anythings possible smile

I was wondering when you'd pop in on this Anna smile I've personally worked with several models with disabilities and I love shooting them. They know what they want and go for it without caring what others think. Just keep doing what you're doing and don't let people stop you.

I am an adult living with ADHD and PTSD. the most i have ever asked is for a photographer to explain something differently, or use different words when explaining.

Everyone learns differently, and material that is easy for one person isnt always for another.

Why aren't there any disabled models in Australia?

Do we discriminate over here?

Yes, if they weren't part of the story I was telling with the images.  I would also work on how to communicate with her before we removed them.  I don't think of this as any different as removing sun glasses or tennis shoes, if that is what the shot calls for.

I would expect them to be able to handle it the same way I expect models to hold poses, and refrain from squinting and so on.  If they couldn't or wouldn't, that would be their choice and I would expect them to let me know ahead of time.  The same way I would expect a model to let me know they are sick, just cut or dyed their hair, gained or lost 15 pounds, got sunburned, etc.

Me as a disabled model is curious about the opinion from the members of Model Mayhem about this... Let's discuss this subject!

Depends on the disability and genre to be shot.

A model with a serious mental disability would be a no go for nude or lingerie (which I don't shoot anyway). I would do lifestyle type work with this type of a person.

A model with a physical disability and of sound mind, I will shoot any genre she/he would want to shoot.

I don't have a hand so I guess I fall into this category as well. smile I don't know, call me crazy but I don't see it as much of a disability. I'm different yes but I'm ABLE to do everything so I don't classify myself as dis-ABLED.

So far the photographers I worked with have loved me even with my disability. I've had some honestly find me more fun to work with than other models. I sometimes contribute my personality towards my disability. It's not a problem...at least for me. Just the other day I went climbing through a tree and even went swinging on a vine it had singing "I am Jane! Watch me swinggg!"....Being disabled should never stop anyone from working but yes if it's a problem I never whine. I just say ok shrug my shoulders and figure it's their loss not mine. I'd love to find a agency though and to be honest my disability does make me hestiate towards pursueing that.

its great to see people that dont judge. i am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids. i dont have an actual port set up but hope to work with photographers who dont become prejudiced on it. we are all unique in our own ways...you girls rock and lets keep it alive that being disabled is is what makes us unique in different ways.
