I was just wondering if any other male models have been asked to "get a little bit hard" during an underwear shoot. If so, how did you feel about it?

Also, photographers, have you ever asked a model to inflate himself a little bit?

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are and hope for an interest, honest discussion.

wow that's  a weird request. Is almost insulting maybe they don't think your package is big enough so they need you to get hard lol smile

You said it was an underwear shoot not a porn shoot right?

I do not think I could do that; it is either soft or hard except in the passing thru stage which doesn't last very long! yikes

Ask the photographer if he wants to give you a hand.

I think it would have to depend on the vibe the photographer was giving out.  Now, if I was shooting a nude male and it looked like he just got out of the pool, I might suggest "doing something."

I would consider that close to the same as asking a female to push her chest out more... sometimes it's not about "bigger", it's about "fuller". Filling out the clothes... loses the wrinkles and is a little more HAWT sometimes. I don't think it has anything to do with the actual equipment. More about equipement posistioning.

if you are on a real shoot the stylist should have prosthetics available, often its clay type substance, something maleable to jam in there.

the lack of real information on this board to such a seemingly straight forward thing is really telling...

Dwight, that is hillarious! And to offer my answer to the OP, i remember seeing the art director stopping a Sports Illustrated photoshoot with Elle Macpherson and it was inaudible but she was asking her to ...you know play with her wet shirt... to have her make them (.) (.) stand out a little more. Now for a guy to be asked the same thing, seems odd to me but you're for hire and i guess if it helps the look they want. But it's all about you and if you felt that it was a weird request ...then it was.

wow what a question to ask someone to get a little bit hard, maybe it was just to attract attention to the pic rather than it being aimed as a porn or weird way

OK...this falls under the realm of the stranger than life.....I was shooting a couple...in their underware...shot her...shot them together and then was getting ready to shoot just him...as i was adjusting the lights I heard her asking him to ...well...'inflate himself'....turned around and lol and behold...the'inflating' was underway....asked them just what the 'heck' (not my exact words) they were doing...she wanted him to be...'more impressive' ...I then had to explain what I meant by...'The last shot needs to be a head shot....fom the shoulders UP!'
This is Vegas and nothing...and I mean nothing...ever surprises me anymore...

During a nude shoot - I have asked the male model to heat himself up a bit - 'cause it was in my old studio and it was really cold in there and it wasn't flattering to him to be THAT cold.  My understanding for underwear shoots is they have sponges they can use to fill the underwear the way they wish them to look but I guess if the model is OK with it, he could be asked to help fill them in better himself.  I think I would leave that to the Wardrobe stylist on the set.

ive even heard of stylists creating the perfect bulge by using batting, popsicle sticks, fishing line, and tape to build the perfect prosthetic.  but i think depending on the tone and vibe you could decide whether the tog was crossing a line.

Nothing's wrong with outlines, unless you don't want them.

I could think of a few Cannon and Nik-on jokes right now.

If it's something you don't want to do, don't do it, and face the consequences.  Nobody else can tell you what morally (or physically) feels right.  Communication is key.  If you felt awkward about it you could have just said "you're kidding right?"  If it felt porno-ish you could have just said so, or told them you didn't feel right about it.  That would have provoked some logic on their part.  And if they just say "look, if you don't want us to shoot your package we'll get someone else in here that will get 'er done" then you will have to decide to fill the space or scurry off in a huff.

I did see a pic of a guy in a neighboring state in an underwear shot and they caught it at half staff, unclear whether accidentally (in a prior picture he was lying face down) or on purpose.  But regardless, another guy model complimented how great it looked when it was that engaged in the shoot.  Personally, I found that comment a little more off color than keeping the shower water cold or asking someone to add a little something to the pic, male or female.

I didn't feel it was inappropriate. I did it and it wasn't a big deal to me. I was just wondering how everyone else in this situation feels. Like I said, I am fine with it. I understand they just want to make a better photo.

That is a little bit of an off request.  I shoot a lot of underwear and swimwear and it is common to ask the model to adjust their penis depending on the style of underwear or swimsuit.  For example, I have had a model show up on set with their penis pushed off to one side or another and then asked the model to push it straight down in order to fill out the pouch and not be so noticiable.  It is most common for the penis to be placed straight down in the underwear or swimwear, as this is what most clients expect in the final images.

It is also not unusual to utilize various "enhancment" techniques to fill out the pouch of underwear and/or swimwear in a shoot.  It is also not uncommon to de-enhance a model if they are too large.

I also shoot erotic images of male models and that would be the only time I would ever request a model to arouse themselves.  But, if it is just for a regular underwear shoot, this would not be requested of the model.

Male underwear and swimwear shoots are no unlike shooting a female in a bra for advertising.  Female breasts come in all sizes and it is not uncommon for women to utilize various techniques to enhance and/or de-enhance their breasts in a photo featuing undergarments or swimwear.  The same holds true for men who are doing underwear and swimwear modeling.

At least it wasn't a female model who was asked to "get a little bit" hard. Now that would have been strange.
