I see a lot of images, shot by really good photographers, where one light is used.

Not counting my Ring Flash I have six strobes. Makes me wonder if I need all these damn lights?

I have something like 10 different strobes and hot lights. I mostly shoot with only one 1,000 watt focusing spot. Most of my lights never leave their storage cases.

Google "Dean Collins" for the definitive answer to that wonderment.

I would say 90% of my images are shot with one light.

Owner of close to a dozen lights with three Speedotron power supplies... BUT... sometimes just one 'quality lightsource' is all you need.  Here's Tracey shot with a 1'x4' panel softbox in the SM studio.  Studio photo on the MM page... wink

Almost every shot in my port was done with one light and a few reflectors. Either I don't know how to use more than one like (very likely) or one light just suits my style more

one light; wished I'd had another for the grrl...

but the recipes in this book use a startling number of lights, which is one thing that fuels my purchasing habit.

you can do a lot with one light,
or you can do a lot with a lot of lights.

It's all in how you use it.
sometimes less is more.

It's just another technique. If you have good ambient for fill or reflectors you can make it look like more lights.

I'm under house arrest right now. BUT as soon as they let me leave I'll send the lights right out!

One classic one light setup is the snooted strobe head shot that leaves a halo on the background.

I shoot a multitude of different setups. What you can say about multiple lights is that it gives you options - can't do rim lighting from both sides with a hard light at the front with a single light!

That said, one light can give you some fantastic results which are clean and simple - which can be of benefit to a models portfolio. Obviously the trick is understanding lighting (inverse square, bounce, lighting modifiers, position of light for various effects).

depends for me, sometimes i get the job done with only a beauty dish+grid, others i have 5-6 lights goin. really just depends on what i want out of the image, the # that it takes to achieve it is irrelevant

I typically only use one light and either a reflector or am balancing with natural light. I have found that for my work and interests I mainly only need the one. I have a 400 w/s strobe to use mostly outdoors and 3 canon speedlights for indoor work which provide enough power for my tastes. I will typically use two strobes to do a larger group or to illuminate a backdrop. But you can go really far with just one light and a reflector

P.s. The images in my port are all done with a single light, in most cases a speedlight and a reflector (or not).

Most of my BWs are shot with one continous light (500W). I did not have any other lights when I shot them.

Technically is a reflector considered a light? I don't know because I'm a rookie. This image was shot with one. I'll take a few of the lights you can spare. I'm sure I could use them.
