My mentor has an awesome smaller Bowen beauty dish (3 stud lock mount). Although I can also borrow his Calumet (Bowen) strobes, is there any way I can mount this to an Alien Bee without modification? I'm assuming no but I thought I'd ask.

I think you need to modify it...

The problem is that the tube won't go inside the dish, as long as you have the Bowens ring on...

I have Calumet Genesis units (Elinchrom mount.) I bought a Bowens mount beauty dish. I removed the adaptor, spent about an hour with a bench grinder and an Elinchrom speed ring adaptor, and it now fits. I'm sure something similar could be done with yours.

I have Alien Bees as well and if you put all four of the pinch clamps (making up terms now) inside of the bowens mount they will hold the beauty dish enough to make it work. I bought a large softbox off eBay that was supposed to be a "universal" mount but it was a Bowens. The pinch clamps held the 36x48 softbox as long as I didn't move my lights around alot or bump into them. I eventually drilled four holes into the spots where the pinch clamps were to secure it.

If you're just using it one time you should be fine. Just be mindful if you bump the dish it will come off.

Bringing this back up, has any one else tried putting a Bowens modifier on a Balcar mount?

I have that adapter - got it from Paul Buff 20 years ago.
