Probably just need to update your copy of ACR from Adobe. You can try the Updates system within Photoshop, or go here for the download.
I would love to retouch some of these beautiful photos as well but I also have troubles with the .arw files. The posted download link for the Photoshop update is only for CS4. I have CS3 at the moment, is there any way to open the files with CS3 as well?

You can use LR if you have it, and if not you can use the newest version of the Adobe DNG Converter [Mac and Win] to convert them to DNG, which will in turn allow you to open them in CS3.
