What do you want to shoot?
What do you use now?
How does that limit you/what would you like improved from that model?

LOL, thats a wide open question... do you have a budget? Do you have lenses in one family or another??

You should go to a store and feel them out to see which you like better. Write down your requirements, and then find a model that suits those needs from the brand you liked best.

UGG, you killed the requisite canon v. Nikon debate...with some sony and olympus thrown in for fun.

Seriously though, you gotta give a little more info than canon v. nikon.

We talkin Coolpix? D5000, 20d, F3, D3???

the quintessential 35mm Nikon work horse just add a power winder.... unbeatable and damn near indestructible.

If you're just starting out, don't reach for the high end stuff.

Get one decent DSLR (A Rebel would be a good choice) with a good lens.

Go into a store and pick what fits your hand and where you like the way how you look through the viewfinder.

When you have more experience, you'll know what to buy.
