Has anyone else ever gone to a shoot, waited for the model and gave up, only to find that the model had done the same?
The model and I determined that we literally saw each other but ddn't think it was the other party.
The model had arrived in an outfit style that she'd mentioned way back in a long PM but I had forgotten about. Therefore I assumed she was either somone else's model or dressed for some event.
I was killing time taking pictures of some classic cars that had gathered in the lot, so she must of thought I was a different photographer there for that event.
I sent my number, which she claimed didn't work, and she sent her number (with a wrong digit) just after I left for the location.
You hadn't seen photos of her prior to you meeting? Or did she look that different?
EDIT: when a shoot is confirmed and planned out. I always print the email or PM unless there is a phone conversation which there usually is one. Still print it out though.
aww maaan that sucks but hey - at least you both know now that neither flaked!
a couple weeks ago I had a team member no show... after calling a few times, walking to where they lived and banging on the door, I gave up, paid the other people for their time and sent them home. As I walked back to my place with my gear I saw the no-show sitting outside relaxing and having a smoke. I was so pissed my hands were shaking.

...............
Nope. I at least tell the model what type of vehicle I will be driving. Since I prefer to meet at a restaurant, I always sit in the waiting section, and keep my eye open for any "suspicious" looking girl. And then I tell them I will be the old guy in the waiting section.
Looking at photos (yours and hers) is the best way, but girls can change their looks; hair color, so I often ask what she will be wearing.
Bernie Browder wrote: You sure it WAS her? The last part sounds a little "flaky" to me.
I had described how the model was dressed, so she could have said "yes, that's what I was wearing".
The "duh moment" came when I reviewed our ongoing PM, in which she had linked examples to the exact type of outfit she was wearing.
It turned out that the location wouldn't have worked that well with the style, and I have taken advantage by picking a place much more suitable for the re-scheduled shoot.
Provide the other party with a description of yourself, what you will be wearing, vehicle, and license plate.
Don't shoot a new model at a new location, which I had attempted to do at that shoot.
Speak on the phone before leaving.
Since I am such a cruious fellow.... where did you plan to meet? I mean how many girls traveling solo, looking like they need a portfolio update can there be at a park, or at a McDonalds?

Definitely a good idea IMO. The license plate is unnecessary I think, but the rest is good. Hell put a photo of yourself in your profile, I appreciate it when photographers do that so I can put a face to the name when I'm talking to them, and so I can recognize them when I see them.
we went to pick up a model in the big city once at the corner of X and Y. well it turns out that X street is actually split in two (one road for reach direction) with a greenbelt in the middle. so we spent some time with the model on our cellphone saying "but we are at X and Y" when she was at the other "X and Y". lol. we eventually found each other.
I would have asked her if she wanted to pose for pictures in front of cars.
A- you would have found out it was her
B- she would have said she was waiting for a photographer, you say what photographer maybe i know 'em, she says your name.
Either way it would have worked out.

Instead of just saying you will meet her at the Hullabaloo event, be specific. tell her you will meet her at noon at the hotdog stand (example).
Perhaps you got caught up in photographing the cars?

People miss each other, but rarely like that. Everyone needs to take some blame.
In over 250 shoots, I've only had this happen once before, along with one near miss where the model finally asked if I was the photographer.

That's why I have my assistant call the number to confirm the shot and make sure it works; therefore, there are no excuses. If I meet at a location I always ask, "What are you wearing so I know it's you?"

It was a park that I wasn't very familiar with, and I later discovered that I sent a map link to a lot about a block from where I was, and an address to a third lot.
As I mentioned, I violated my own no new models at new locations rule.
This thread sounds like "please tell me that I'm not an idiot and that this model isn't a flake and that you all have stories like this because right now I'm questioning the situation but I don't want to admit that this girl is just another wanna-be..."

No one will know until the re-scheduled shoot happens or not.
I promise to not make this a "Supermodel TFCD" thread and will post an update no matter how it goes.
I'm more timid than I should be about approaching strangers, and perhaps the model was the same way.
Also, I was very burned-out from shooting the two previous days.

Moral.. do not kill time taking shots of someting, and not paying attention, when you should be on the lookout for the model. I see some are blaming the model.. Hummmmm....OK..
rp_photo wrote: Also, she arrived in a rave-style outfit while I was assuming a basic casual.
Never assume.
rp_photo wrote: But then I was there with a D300 around my neck most of the time, and she could have done the same.
Well, you did say you were taking shots of cars. If it is like most car rallies, there were other photographers with cameras around their necks. Sort of difficult for a girl to start approaching strange men and asking them if they are there to shoot her. Probably some would have said "yes".

I can't disagree with any of this.
Somehow, I feel that having an extended amazing shoot the day before worked against me.
I had a near mutual-miss a few weeks ago. The photographer was picking me up at the metro station. I arrived about a half hour early and called to let him know that, if he was set to start, I was there. The call went to voicemail. The greeting said his name, so I knew that it was the right number. About ten minutes before the designated time, I went from the sheltered part of the station to the loop where drivers can pick people up. Wait wait wait. No photographer. Five minutes after the time that he was supposed to be there, I called again to tell him that I was going to be waiting in the sheltered part of the station, where I wouldn't be in the wind. Again, the call went to voicemail. Ten minutes later, I called him to tell him that I would wait another fifteen minutes before giving up- again, voicemail. A few minutes after that, he approached me in the station. I asked if he had gotten the messages I left and he looked confused. Oh, well.
Once we successfully met up, the shoot went well, at least!
That's why I like the 4 wheel drive bat mobile. (It's what a friend calls my black truck, with the tinted windows and black topper.) I just tell a new model to look for that and problem solved. Also I stick close to the truck and have some kind of meet point set up and a designated time. Never rely totally on electronic devices like cell phones even though I give them the number. Batteries go dead, there are dead zones (can you hear me now), and people are notorious for writing down or saving the number incorrectly.
Plotting a meet point is getting easier with the advent of Google street view. I can go into a town I have never been to and see visible places to park the bat mobile. Now if I ride to a shoot rather than drive, well my ride sticks out pretty well too and I do as well in reflective riding gear...lol
Not on a shoot, but on a preliminary meeting. When I got home and called to find out what happened she described what she was wearing (Goth-type outfit and makeup) and I realized that at one point we had looked right at one another. The incident finally got me to carry a cell phone as a matter of course.
i had this happen to me at a group shoot several yrs ago, the model i was supposed to shoot at a certian time i'd been unable to find all day, in the meantime i'd spent quite a while talking to another model who looked sort of familer..
after 1/2 the hour id had for this model was gone, i'd noticed this model who id chatted with earlier was sitting around doing nothing, i asked is she had a shoot or was on break, she replied the guy she was supposed to shoot with she couldnt find.. so we shot for 30 min or so.
near the end of us shooting i told her how much i loved her hair, and she commented that she'd just hanged it from red...
"red" i thought,, wow..
i asked her who she was supposed to be shooting with, she said 'matt something or another"
i asked her is she ever considered Matty [ what everyone calls me] and Matt could be the same person..
she sort of starred at me for a moment and then asked if her having just colored her hair had thrown me off?
It had. and i'd missed the comment from her she'd changed it.
