I LOVE fur and leather. The real thing always photographs better and it feels better to me too. I really only buy vintage, but that's more of just an aesthetic thing.
I'm really schizophrenic when it comes to that. I don't like artificial products, because it damage the environment while being made, and you don't know the effect by having it close to your skin. Real fur is something I really find amazing. But I don't want any animal harmed. If I knew that it had a good life and a painless death as possible, I think it is ok (and you use the rest of the animal also).
I love my leather boots, and my motorcycle jacket is leather too, I do have two VINTAGE fur coats (they belonged to my very fashionable great auntie) and vintage fox stole, I've worn them only a hand full of times but I gotta say I love the way they feel but I would never buy a new one.. not now.. its horrible how they the fur...
but I honestly think there is nothing wrong with wearing vintage one....
i buy the best possible looking fauxs of both. i love the smell of leather and when its all worn in it feels great, but i hate the idea of killing something just so i can wear what it was born and meant to live in.
i do have several vintage furs that i never ever wear...i think im mostly terrified that someone will dump a bucket of paint on me or something.
Leather, sure. Vintage furs yes. If its been dead for decades then I don't see a problem. Also in very cold climates its the best way to keep warm for reals!

I eat beef so I feel fine wearing leather, if anything I feel better because I'm using more of the animal that was killed.
Actual fur disgusts me though. I can't touch it. Even if I know it's vintage or even knowing the rest of the animal is used or whatnot I find it gross. When I do touch fur I get a little creeped out and disgusted because I think of the poor animal that was killed for it. Real fur is soft and cuddly to most but it grosses me out when it's not on the actual animal.

Sorry, but your reasoning makes no sense to me. You're creeped out that fur isn't on the animal, yet you're fine with wearing animal flesh?
Not that I have the money to buy things with real fur or real leather, but I don't agree with using animals just for their hide and fur, so I have no desire to purchase/use anything with leather or fur. I'm pretty sure most of my shoes are leather free but I'm sure there are some that I've bought without thinking or on sale and I didn't bother to check.
I would be more okay with it if I knew that the animals giving their fur/hide were also used for meat, but I know thats usually not the case. And it would be pretty difficult to find out which products took hide/fur from animals who were also being used for food. I'm sure some expensive/high end companies would be able to let you know where your leather/fur comes from, but I don't have the money to buy that type of stuff anyway, so it doesn't matter.
I don't even like the look of fur anyway, real or not. Leather can be okay though, it has its moments.

the fur coats that I have are from the 40s. They belonged to my great gram and were kept in the most gorgeous condition. I didnt buy them, they were just sort of passed down to me. Throwing them out wouldnt help the animals that it took to make them...so I keep them.

me too
I'm not allergic to them either - so is the only fur I ever CAN touch

Me neither.
I love both leather and fur, real or good quality faux.
I'm not a vegetarian so I figure if I can eat it, I can wear it.
Endangered species and animals bred in horrible circumstances for their fur are a huge NO of course.
What I don't get is the "leather yes/fur no" argument.
Leather is the same hide, just without the hair on it, so what's the difference.
It depends on the animal it came from imo.
In fact, if anybody has a good website to buy such from, I'd love it if you'd PM it to me. There simply isn't enough demand for it for me to pick some up for designing anywhere locally.
Sorry to tell you, but they do.. not everywhere tho. In the same way they pull the fetahers of ducks and chickens alive just so they can produce more during their lifetime, that is a horrible procedure.
I guess it is hard to know what you buy. Well, but I still like it.
When did you last time found "Fox" "Mink" or "Sobel" on the menu in a restaurant??
And by the way, most of us have fur brushes, brushes made out of animal hair, right?

Honestly there is a lot of ignorance in this thread.
I can somewhat agree with the leather "yes" and fur "no" crowd.
I personally dont wear either, Im mostly vegetarian, and a pretty seasoned animal rights activist.
When it comes to leather, Beef is a huge industry. We consume so much, as well as other parts of the cow, that not using the skin just seems like a waste.
Fur on the other hand comes from factories, where extreme situations occur quite frequently. Sometimes animals are skinned alive for the small portion of fur that is usable towards a piece of clothing. If anyone hasnt seen the fur factory video from china where they are skinning cats alive (oh yes cats, you thought that was mink... they may have sold it as such but sometimes cat and dog fur is used as a cheaper substitute unannounced.) its a bone chilling video, you hear the poor animal screeching as its being cut apart and the still living remains chucked into a bin. So for those of you that think you are so fashionable to go against status quo and claim you adore fur, maybe you should understand the situations of how its obtained.
And to another user, faux fur has come a long way and doesnt photograph any differently than real fur.
Also if you think im speaking of happenings from years ago, im not.... up until recently i was an employee for Burlington Coat Factory who was on constant ridicule for selling real fur. Up until i left, the company was still recalling loads of coats found to have contained dog fur not realized when the buyer had purchased them for the store. Dog fur mainly comes from china where its obtained cheaply for higher profits. This is a sick practice and needs to be stopped, however if the demand is there then the animal abuse will continue.
