Hello fellow MM'ers..
I am curious for other photographers input...
I recently purchased a 24-70 canon lens, and am looking at purchasing another lens to add to my "collection". I shoot mainly weddings... Curious to know if you were in my position, money not being a factor;..which lens would you go after next? I am not shooting full frame...that will be in the spring.

70-200 and you should be pretty well rounded.  Maybe a fast prime for some low light work also.

What do you want to photograph?

To buy lenses just to own lenses doesn't make sense.

24-70 (what you have) is ideal on a cropped sensor camera for portrait (at its longest it would be like a 105mm lens on FF)

On a FF camera it's a good wide angle, but too short a focal length for portrait.

Hello,

I shot weddings for a few years and loved my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS for shooting handheld photo-J style. I shoot full-frame, but would also advise it for a crop one. I actually currently work with a photography equipment rental website now that ships lenses all over the country, many times for people in exactly your situation, who are deciding what they could use to make their work better, so shameless plug for BorrowLenses.com and mention that Ryan Entwistle directed you if you ever order smile

I second/third/fourth the 70-200 2.8 extremely versatile lens combo between the two.

The other way to go is an 85 f1.8 & 200 f2.8 prime option

What focal length do you like, or would you like to try?

You could get the 70-200, and a lot of people like that zoom range. But a wide angle zoom might be better for your purposes. Or a fast prime. The 70-200 isn't a magic bullet.

There are three lens needed for weddings -- a 24-70, a much wider one (10-20) and the 70-200f2.8 IS. This is your ceremony, outside lens.

I am on my third 80-200 f2.8 lens for weddings - because they were all improved.

My first one did not have a tripod collar, the second no IS and now the third has vr and is much sharper.

The 70-200 will maybe in the future be replaced by the rumored 50-200 f2.8.

My main wide angle was a 18-70 and rarely if ever did I need wider.

The 12-24 Sigma a friend uses on a crop camera has been nice for over all shots of the church but in 20 weddings he has only used it once or twice.

Depending on where you live -- the Sigma 50-150 might be better for crop sensor if your churches are small.

the 70-200 almost every time and once a 70-300 for a outside wedding.

The 24-70 and 70-200 (the latter preferably 2.8 IS) should cover just about every coceivable wedding shot, especially in full frame. With a crop sensor something a bit wider would also be useful.

the only thing that i really want and i'm missing is the

50 1.2 and the 85 1.2...

not sure which one i should get..probably the 85 since i already got the 50 1.4 and i dont think the 0.2 increment is worth 2k

I have both. The 85 is far better than the 50. The 50 is cool, but its contrast is a little heavy handed compared to the 85. I don't know how to describe it better than that.

On a 1.6 crop, the 24 1.4 MkII is phenomenal. I've done entire shoots with just that lens.

It's got some new coating that's really great. Plus it's got the closest focusing distance of any of the primes.

If you're shooting weddings and getting a FF body soon, consider a fast prime for your second (crop sensor) body.

I use the 24-70 f/2.8L as well... and I'm leaning towards 85mm f/1.2L for my next lens.

One of the nice things about wedding work is you can afford to rent nice glass.  smile  Try a few out and see if you really want to dive in and invest in one.

If I was in your shoes, I would invest in a wide angle lens like the 16-35mm f/2.8 L or even the 17-40mm f/4 L.
If you go for a telephoto, go with the 70-200mm f/2.8 L.

Good luck,

WZ

I recently snagged the nikon 10.5 f/2.8 fisheye, and the 80-200mm f/2.8 as well. I thing my next will be something a fast lens like the 17-55 maybe. Not sure.

I do wanna pick up an 85 and a 105 prime as well.

My thoughts as well is that for group photos you need something wider that a 24-70mm
Price no object would be 16-35 f2.8IIL
For me next on list is a 50mm f4.5 for my Med Format Mamiya

----That's a great combination for weddings.

Move to FF camera body (many reasons for this for a wedding photographer)

Pick up a good macro lens--- e.g.  100mm macro (1st gen or new L)

85mm f/1.2 L

16-35 L II if you like shooting wide

I've got to agree with most of the responses on here.  For weddings, I mostly use my Canon 24-70 f/2.8.  I have the Canon 70 - 200,  but it's the f/4.0.  It is fine for the sports I shoot, but not for low-light venues like indoor weddings and receptions.  I also find the need for a wide-angle for the group shots... maybe the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.  Having a Canon 50 f/1.8 or better might not be a bad idea, either.

Round out the range with the 70-200 2.8 IS. Put it on another body and keep them both on you with one of these: http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/ … r-bag.aspx
It's the perfect holster and you wont have to swap lenses to grab a shot you see. Plus you spread the images over two cards for further image safety.
