Headshots - Free (Venice)

I'm a working actor who has been doing headshots for other actors for many years. I put down my camera a few years ago, burned out with the many idiots who think that just because they have a camera, they know headshots.

I want to shoot actors again, and now, like everybody else, I've gone digital. But before I start charging money again, I want to get my chops back. For that, I'll need to do some free sessions. If you want a makeup artist, that will be on your dime. But the photography is completely at no cost to you. Feel free to bring several wardrobe changes. And especially for the ladies, feel free to bring a friend if it makes you feel better. The more comfortable you feel, the better the pictures will be.

What you want are headshots you can afford, and everybody can afford free. What I want is to get back into doing the kind of photography that I love doing. Headshots for actors. I'll charge market value when I'm happy with the work that I'll put my name to.

My name is Bob. Call me at (310) 306-7807 and let's talk about your headshots. And while we're at it, I'll tell you whatever else I know about the business as I have experienced it.

Anyone else see this as a seriously depressing trend?

Agreed, he's doing TF* shoots to build his book, just like here on MM wink

Exactly.  I don't see a problem.  Chances are good that any pro photographer in his area that charges for work were not going to see those that would get their head shots done by this guy anyway.

Looks good in my books too.

Why do so many professions eat their young?
Perhaps the OP should just go mock the reflection in the mirror.

Have you seen the poster's work?

Can you do better?

Do it, and charge...otherwise this is just another sour grapes post. For what it's worth, I'm in the same market 9yours and his), and I've shot bands as well as actors for free. If it benefits my book, I shoot it. If it doesn't benefit my book, I charge.

I've posted the same ads on CL and you could just as easily been linking to one of mine.

OP...

Do you have any links or tears to your National Geographic work? Your website showed some animal shots, but googling your name+ National Geographic yielded no images. I'd love to see some of your published work...I'd love to shoot for National Geographic, it's always looked like an exotic lifestyle.

It's often amusing to look at the profiles & portfolios of people who post the most common variations of this rant.  There're often great similarities in them that are telling in regards as to why the poster finds it to be an issue.

You'd have to submit to them to see if they are interested.

Yep.  Comments like that.  No one cares, and it doesn't mean you deserve to be paid.  It MIGHT mean that if some guy giving it away for free is hurting you, YOU have an issue.  smile

Where are all your images hiding at?
Your site yields one image?
Photonet yields 4 images?
MM yields 5 images?
Your blog is empty?

I'm not saying you don't have more than these images,
it's just their hiding somewhere.

...right, but on Photo.net where this came up last month with you, there was nothing produced by you to substantiate the 14+ years you've been shooting for NG.

You simply ducked quietly out of that thread when you were called out. Now, I'm not calling you out... but I'm asking the following:

If your work doing headshots is superior,(which is the basis of your complaint) why not provide samples? perhaps a link to each?

If you are basing your rant on "professionalism" and the downward trend to TF work that you find abhorrent, you might want to back up said professionalism with actual sources and examples.

Sorry I'm not a pornographer. Maybe because I lack hundreds of blatantly obvious nude women on my portfolio for no reason other then to be nude, you don't view me as a photographer... Seems most of MM is people trying to get women to be naked in front of a camera.

GWC comes to mind.

In a day where equipment is (comparatively) cheap and anyone can call themselves a photographer, there's always going to be some yahoo offering free or cheap work.  And people will get what they pay for.

The proof is in the pudding - or in this case in the text of the ad itself:

What you want are headshots you can afford, and everybody can afford free. What I want is to get back into doing the kind of photography that I love doing. Headshots for actors. I'll charge market value when I'm happy with the work that I'll put my name to.

What he's basically saying is, "I kinda suck right now, so I'll give you free shitty headshots.  If I'm ever any good, I'll start charging."

Are you really worried about him taking your business?  And are people willing to accept shitty work because it's free the kind of people you want as clients?

I can't post anything or use anything that has been used while I am on assignment, once again, I'm a working photographer, see the difference yet?

WORKING PHOTOGRAPHER

Okay now since I have WORK to go to (Where people depend on you to show up) I am leaving my house as of now.

You and your little troll friends can just keep picking, because while you are on here, you certainly aren't working and that my friend, means you are not a working photographer.

Just another hobbyist.

i too can't find anything by the op that would even remotely show any level of professional work...

the only references to natgeo are the ones in his site, and his craiglist ad... the only pics i can find do not exactly seem like the type you'd ever see published in natgeo, more like pics from a day at the zoo...

i call shenannigans... SHENNANIGANS...
