Might be good to ask in the photographers ' forum as well, since most of the time it's them who do the submissions.

As many likely know, in the US, generally, copyright belongs to the photographer. Unless the makeup artist or other creatives have a usage license from the photographer allowing the creatives to submit to a mag, they cannot do so legally. I am aware of two situations where a creative submitted to a mag WITHOUT authority from the photographer and the situation did not end well for the creative. In one of those instances the photographer was actually in negotiations with another mag for FIRST publication rights. Unfortunately, the submission by the creative and subsequent publication by the mag, made the photographer's efforts meaningless. He was absolutely apoplectic. The creative had a very hard time getting work with other pros thereafter. Regardless, the Bible for submittals is called Photographer's Market: http://www.photographersmarket.com/ The book lists thousands of outlets and submittal requirements (sometimes by genre). If you are in the United States and you do wish to submit, just be sure to talk to the photographer ahead of time and seek specific permission. Good luck!

I have a related question and I apologize if this is a stupid question~ If the magazines accept submissions, do you just call to find out what kind of submissions are they looking for, and where to submit the image? Let's say copyright is not an issue since it's a joint effort between the MUA & Photographer to work on submission. How would one proceed? Thanks in advance~ !

For the most part it has to be the photographer that does the foot work. Sometimes stylists will work a lot with a particular mag and that seems to also be a way in. But all I know is we (MUAs) dont have much pull on getting it submitted. Sorry- I just re read and saw I didnt fully answer. The photographers I know submit through email but I think they already had established a relationship with a photographer. On a side note. If you are going to submit something the styling has to be on point. No Forever 21 clothing!! LOL So the stylist used is VERY important. Unless you are trying to submit a beauty with no accessories.

Either way, you are a FANTASTIC artist and I have been an admirer of your work in the mag for awhile now.

I was thinking of just submitting beauty images~! but...i feel it's somehow a chicken/egg thing~ how would the photog and mag establish a good relationship if the photographer didn't submit images previously and work together somehow? I was told by one of the photographers I worked with that for styling, they have to not yet be on the rack/in the stores~ @__@ She used to work in Miami so her stylist used to get the clothes from NY~ I'm in NorCalifornia - that's not going to happen unless I get on the good side of the PR directors of whoever is local...I'll be working on that...i guess

Great thread and deserves reviving! Tangent accept submissions as does SOMA, Fiasco (has that been mentioned already?) Also new publications like Unfolded and Defying Mainstream. Hope that is of help to some! I am UK based myself and find that you can get as lucky with Australian mags as you can with your local market. Mulika @ My Capacious Bottega
