Ummmm, it's called the Nigerian Check Fraud scam because every Nigerian, it would seem, is pulling this stunt.

What is most important here is that you recognise the fraud, rather than any names or numbers the fraudsters may use from time to time.

The Avoid Scams button on your mystuff page is there for a reason.

Yes it's a scam.

Why can't they pay wardrobe/stylist directly?

Go to your bank and put the money back in your account.

As soon as the bank finds out the check is bad, they will not only hold you responsible for the lost money but they are also likely to charge you a NSF fee.

I received an email a few days ago from a profile under the name of someone I know, the profile has since been taken down, and when I contacted the person that I actually know, she had no clue what I was talking about. The email contact came from caramelomediahouse@aol.com and same as everyone else, the person claims to be Tommy Middleton in HR with Hello Magazine. HUGE Scam, they say they want to send you money and you have to WIRE $500 to a stylist. If it sounds too good to be true, it is!

PLEASE HELP.

So I received the same email from profile #3218589 and profile #3227236, both talking about paying gigs.

I'm new at this so in my excitement I did e-mail them (from my e-mail, not mm messaging) my information, as you know includes; name, addy, age, phone....

I obviously made a mistake...

but, how bad is this? Should I be concerned they have that info? I feel my name, addy, phone and age is pretty simple information to achieve without me telling them.

I haven't received any mail from them yet and if I do will be sure to not cash it...

Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks,
Caleb

Caleb,

As long as you didn't give them your bank account or credit card information, you should be alright.  Just ignore them and they'll move on to the next victim.  Remember, most of these scammers are in Nigeria, so they're not going to hunt you down and harm you (even though they may threaten to).  But be aware that scammers sell email addresses to each other, so expect to get lots of emails about wealthy dead relatives and princes who want to share their fortune with you.

Ron,
thank you for the information and reassurance. LOL dead relatives and princes, I'll keep an eye out. However, this makes me happy that I did create a separate e-mail addy just for model mayhem so even if my email were to be hacked, there's nothing in it.
Thanks.

I emailed back and forth a couple times to get as much information as I could. "Tommy Middleton" said the job would be for a November issue of the magazine but said in a later email the shoot date was December 14th and 15th..
Also be aware of bad grammar and odd wording as my messages were full of it. I received this bogus check in the mail today for $1875 even though I was told the total amount would be $1100. It had a return address from Pawtucket, RI with the address on the check inside from LA from Otis College of Art electronically signed by some woman. I got another email from "Tommy" saying that I had to IMMEDIATELY WIRE funds from Western Union to the "stylist" Sandra Harper in TEXAS. Ya ok.
I know people get excited over the thought of paying jobs, but ask yourself when you're new why would someone just offer up thousands of dollars? SCAM!

I agree.

I was thinking about it though...

Is there a way to scam these scammers?

Is there anyway to cash the check and them be held liable for the lack of funds?
(like at a we cash checks now place or anything like that?)

If there was it'd be a good way to stick it to these guys and tell them to quit effing with people who are hoping for legitimate work.

NO! The check is no good...that's the scam.

You cash the check, send the money, then sometime later the check bounces and you are responsible to pay back ALL the money. (probably plus back fees too)

(p.s. how on earth are people STILL having to ask if these are scams???)

If it seems like a scam or if you feel like it's a scam, it is a scam. Go with your gut.

You guys should just cash the check keep the money.  and teach them a lesson!! No? Lol

The check is a dud. There is no money to keep, but possible legal trouble for attempting to cash a dud check. It will not teach them a lesson because they have lost nothing.
