Maybe I'm behind the times, but WOW is this series amazing.  Basically he and his wife traveled across the country in a camper, and met stylists/models on the way.  Absolutely incredible..

Anyway, the question is.  There's a very specific look to most of these shots.  I understand much of it is the shooting style.  But a lot has to be editing as well.  Any tips?

One thing is he brings lights with him, and sometimes overpowers the ambient light.

Another is, and I could be way off here, he looks like he might pull a luminosity mask that protects the very high end and then pushes the rest of the image down.

Islands of bright brights in a sea of midtones and shadows.

I feel like Chase Lisbon gets similar light, as does Mark Wangerin sometimes.

I'd like to know more about it, that's for sure.

I thought its all quite obvious and pretty standard and popular approach thats why I didnt want to point out the obvious like low saturated skin tones and gradually getting attention to the subject with a sort of spotlight feel.
Sometimes it feels like lots of enriched darks else less contrasty surrounding and bright and detailed subject.

Spotlight is what I call the style...Spot is the approach...Getting the scene right is what matters in this case big_smile

I agree completely. Photoshop is the least important element in these photos. You need to be studying lighting and composition instead.

"Nothing worth looking at was ever, EVER, done simply in camera. The beautiful, exquisite, yes even subtle works, were all manipulated to an extent, either in a wet dark room with masks and rubylith, or in a computer with the appropriate counter parts. Arguing against this point is foolish and simply serves to show ignorance of photographic history and process."

What I meant was I thought a person who hangs out here as much if not more as I do could guess what has been done or find a way to mimic.

I also checked the op's portfolio and he too knows big_smile

I looked for a way to slow down the slide show. Just about when the images stabilize, they start switching again. Pretty annoying. I think I left after about the 5th slide.

Photographers seem especially prone to creating these annoying Flash sites. It puzzles me why, with all their perceptiveness about artistic matters, they seem oblivious to the worst flaws of website design, as well as to the wealth of guidance on how to fix those flaws. Maybe it's the web designers and not the photographers who are mainly responsible.

I personally liked the fact that I just sit back and watch the content. This thread is not about website design anyway and I hope the mod who will read this is going to be in a good mood big_smile

If you would tell me what problems you have navigating my site, I would appreciate it.

If you personally like it, that's fine. But many users are going to find this site more than confusing. I don't think bringing up design problems is beyond the scope of this forum. This really is a poorly designed site. Just a few questions that a designer should anticipate being raised by this design:

you just have to go here and make your complaint:
http://www.slide.com/arrange?bc=0&fx=0& … &th=0&sc=0

they use third party slide show code for their site

when you use third party code, you pretty much don't have option to customize the settings. now you know and you will ignore those buttons just like i did...

Thanks for the responses guys (those that kept it on track).. It's pretty obvious that lighting is a BIG part of this look.  I'd say in pretty much every one he AT LEAST has a beauty dish with a grid.  It looks like in several others, a light behind as well..

There's still some pretty impressive post processing going on here.  Any thoughts on techniques to get this style would be greatly appreciated.  Obviously don't want the "step by step" of his workflow, but just some ideas to nudge me in the right direction.

I think I missed something, but maybe that was because the slide show kept lurching from photo to photo, even when I was trying to make it stop so I could actually absorb something.

Anyway, from what I was able to see, very nice photos. I'd love to actually be able to spend some time with them at a decent size. Sigh.
