My sister is interested in becoming a plus size model and heard that fresh faces were looking for new plus size models. She sent them her pictures and got back this email a month later:

The only thing is that she didnt know about the $200 "placement" fee and she is just wondering if this is legit or just a scam.  Any tips/ideas/feedback would be great. (she's not into the whole message board thing, sorry)

Others may be able to give you more insight about this, but looking at the magazine's web page, it takes only 1 second to see that this is AMATEURSVILLE all the way.
The design, fonts, photos, and overall look screams - no taste, no talent, low quality all the way.

As you can see the so called cover of this magazine looks like crap. A semi talented 12 yr old could do better.  Any professional in this field is just going to laugh or shake their heads sadly and murmur "there's a sucker born every minute". I'm confident that anyone who applies is "selected". Try it.

Sounds to me like this is scheme to collect $200 by appealing to one's vanity "(You have bee selected"). All you have been selected for is your $200, and you probably won't even get  quality photos out of it.

Wow.  That is one of the worst "professional" websites I've seen in a while.

http://www.freshfacesmagazine.com

Looks like the photographer (probably the same one receiving those $195 fees) made it.  So seems like it's some sort of one-person machine.

Please keep in mind that Fresh Faces Magazine is NOT a Modeling Agency but an entity of the HUSH Agency whereby models are being booked all over the world.

The "HUSH Agency" has no online presence.  That's pretty suspect in this day and age.  I couldn't find a single mention of it anywhere besides that site.

And... they use a free Yahoo email account: hushpublications@yahoo.com

Seems pretty weird to me.

You may want to ask these guys about their experiences:

I would like to know where this "national" magazine is sold, or if you can only order it through the website.

that issue looks great though.

You guys bought up some very good points and I'm sure my sister will take this into consideration. I have messaged those two models. Thanks for the link btw.

The website DOES look unprofessional but that doesnt always mean it's a bad company. I will have to do a little bit more research I suppose.

That's not an issue, that's an image.

If it's an issue, where is the masthead? Where is the publication month? Where is the barcode?

I could make just such a magazine cover in photoshop in about 30 minutes.

Here's my take - they're asking $195 for a quickie shoot where the model does her own wardrobe and makeup? Nope, not professional.

Then they say you can just send in your pictures with $195 and they'll publish them? Are you KIDDING? A magazine that will accept random pictures and just toss them in?

Sorry, no. I don't buy it.

Walk away.

AHA good point. Thanks.

I definitely don't think this is a good idea anymore. Sometimes it's  hard for me to read between the lines. lmao

Also...on the Home webpage it states that it reaches over 100,000 Readers and on the National Model Search webpage it states that reaches over 30,000 Readers.

The $195 Fee might be the "charge" for placing a Photo Ad in their Circular...

I've seen this before...not exactly the same but close enough......and what happens they do a few headshots....put your photos in book full of mug shots...looks like a proof sheet....with your name and contact info below it.....and send you a copy.....that's it......

They make roughly 150 out of every 195 "fee"......the book is cheap....only the cover is fancy....maybe......and someone had mentioned...you can make the cover in PhotoShop in 30 minutes.....

I had two girls ask me to do headshots for them in order to participate in pretty much the same thing......and that's all they got for their trouble.....one crappy badly printed magazine of mug shots......

It's like that "Who's Who" scam thing, where you're basically paying to see your name in a book somewhere that no one else receives, or cares about...

I called FFM and they said that we can see the magazine before we do the photoshoot or pay anything.

So I guess cyntia will look at the magazine and have to decide for herself when she gets there. If it looks like it was made by a 5 year old, she'll run, but if it looks  good enough to put in her port, then she'll fork it over.

WHy would she want to put a Fake magazine picture that she has to pay for in her port. I would never pay to be in a magazine they should be paying the models. If this is a real magazine where can it be bought how do we subscribe?Sometimes people can't tell a scam until the check clears. Then it's much to late.

The yahoo email is a tip off; seriously it is all about the "self promotion" as that photoshop image stated accurately enough.

Some legitimate agencies DO publish your headshots in their book (at a nominal cost, just YOUR portion of the printing) to send to prospects.   But, really no legitimate agency uses yahoo mail....really...only when you plan to change your email address often would you have a throw away email address.

As others have stated, vanity publishing is available cheaply.  If it doesn't have an ISBN number it ain't real.

Oddly, Tracy J. Sip wrote a 140 page book with a vanity publisher  http://www.flipkart.com/cry-little-boy- … 7nx3f2z1hc

Isn't the internet wonderful?
