I have the urge to create some artistic nude images with women holding musical instruments.  I just did a google image search to see what has already been done, or perhaps over-done.  No luck.

Are there any photos here on MM that show nude women holding musical instruments?

Any advice on what to avoid?  Cliches, etc...

Thanks!!

Oooh this sounds fun! I will definitely be checking back in this thread. I'm guessing naked girls with guitars is pretty overdone, maybe something different. I think a flute might not cover enough, maybe a cello? Then again, here's a question, what kind of instruments do you have access to?

There are many around here that will say that women posing with guitars is a tired cliche.  Don't let that get to you, and just make it your own.  Good luck!

I've seen it, and I don't love it. It can be done well, but a concept that simple comes off flat without some oomph.

Well there are some overdone shots.

Like a model with a cello and her form echoing the cello's shape. Same sort of thing has been overdone with a guitar, both electric and acoustic, and somewhat with a violin so I'd avoid the string section.

Now a model with a piccolo or a tuba, you pretty much have an open field. Likewise a bassoon, or trumpet.

Cymbals... (Be careful with cymbals... there are things that could get pinched. LOL)

Think horn section...

Piano... been done. Triangle or glockenspiel... go for it!

I think you should go back to Google. There are millions of images of nude women playing cello, violin (on angle so the nipples dont even show) saxophone, etc.

and a few famous female classical guitarists like Fiona Boyd have posed nude with their instrument.

here's just one on the first page of a google search.

If there's no pics around... who is to say it's been overdone? Or there are no innovative ways to do it? Or that it was done with both a 4 string and a 5 string banjo? There ARE differences, ya know. (Sorry, David... I used to fool around with a 5 string. Meanest instrument I've ever picked up!)

Glen, I think you may have collected the planet's entire  stock of portraits with guitars!   Maybe I should choose a different instrument.  Actually I was thinking of something made of old tarnished brass, like a trumpet or french horn.  You can rent them pretty easily.

Warned you about strings...

Check out a big toy store for 'instruments'. I have a plastic trumpet and violin that were made as kids toys. From 10 feet away, you can't tell that they are not the 'real deal.' I found mine in thrift stores for about a buck each... such a deal.

Two comments: one serious, one flippant:

1) Musicians can tell more easily than you might think whether a model actually knows how to play the instruments she is holding.  Seemingly insignificant details of hand and body position make a huge difference to someone who knows the instrument.

2) Accordions are particularly hazardous to topless women.

Somewhat close to the end, I did spot a wooden flute photo in this list:

https://www.modelmayhem.com/list/70638

Stringed instruments are definitely represented in abundance. I would stay away from stringed instruments, unless I were doing a wide range of musical instrument photos, and simply wanted to add a stringed instrument shot to a collection of images that also contained many other instruments. Likewise, it might also work well if there are several instruments in the same photo. For example, I don't think anyone on Mayhem has photographed a nude symphony orchestra yet.   smile

I think the nude girl with guitar is way over done.  I saw one absolutely amazing image on her that was a nude (implied nude) woman with a bass. I wish I had the link.

I think setting the right mood/tone is very important.  A slight variation in mood can be the difference between tacky and very appealing on a basic level.

I look forward to seeing your results.
