Welcome to the 6th List, Mentors in Body Paint. I created this list for skilled body painters who are willing to mentor, instruct, or advise. If anything, I would like this list of portfolios to be an example of professional body art that newcomers can aspire to.
Reasons you might contact a mentor: -You have already read through Body Painting FAQ.
-I really like that shade of yellow, I wonder which product they used.
-How on earth did they get that effect!?
-Where did they learn to paint like that!?
-Was that brush or airbrush?
-Are they coming to my area soon?
-What would you charge for...?
-I could really use a portfolio review.
-I love this piece but I could really use some constructive criticism.
To find a Mentor
1. Check the below list to see if there is a Mentor in your area
2. If there is, send a message to the Mentor telling them what help you are after. The Mentor will get back to you, telling you if they are able to help, and if so, how to proceed.*
3. If there is not a Mentor local to you, put a request on this thread, and check back regularly as the Mentors list is regularly updated.
*Please be considerate when messaging the listed artists. Not everyone is willing to give up their most awesome secrets! Many Body Painters travel and teach as well. A good message might say something like "Awesome technique! Where did you learn that?" or "When are you teaching in my area?"
If you are assisted by a Mentor, it would be good to show your appreciation by adding a message to this thread. This will also encourage others needing help to seek out a Mentor.

If you are not on this list and you think you'd like to be, please send me a message (I don't bite). When I add a painter to the list, its because they have quality work and quality/tasteful images of their work.
Wow...it always amazes me to find myself in such great company. Thanks for doing this. Hopefully we can help more newbs! I WISH this sort of thing was available 10-15 years ago. I still remember back to the early and mid 90's when the only sites I could find with ANY info were Tim Grattons, Roger Edgecombe, and a guy that only did Gold and Silver.
Edit 12/15/10
Choosing an Airbrush Plugging in your compressor overseas <- I thought this was good to post. I don't think this is something that ever would have crossed my mind if I were an airbrush body painter traveling overseas.

I doubt anyone is actively watching the thread. If you see a sponge/brush mentor that you like, send them a kind message specifying exactly what you want to learn (i.e. technique, materials, inspirations etc). If they are instructors, maybe ask when they will be teaching near you? Good Luck!

Thanks!!
But people are watching the thread Body Painter Rich already PM'd me.
Never doubt the power of the 6th list!!! lol
I'll do my best to fill in until some "real" Canadian bodypainters can step in!
I'm a handpaint bodypainter (started on canvas over 10 years ago) and I'm still learning and always willing to help.
Right before I left this October, I bought wolfe white and black...
I'd love to hear anyone else's experience with Wolfe paint. I'm telling you right now, in 3 weeks I've almost killed that black. Its addictive... Apparently, hard to remove (average of 3 showers) but addictive. So now I'm considering buying more of their colors.

I haven't found anything that out-paints Wolfe FX when it comes to line work. The colors wear well and go down smooth, crisp and dense. Their metallics are fabulous, too.
The black does have a reputation for staining.
However, Wolfe FX is not my favorite product for hand-blending or kabuki applications. Mehron Paradise or MUFE is my favorites for that. (But then again, if I need a gradient, I'm airbrushing it 90% of the time).

I'll definitely check out their metallics then. Its not that I dislike Kryolan but I'm definitely looking for something with more oomph!
I tried this liquid silver from Special Effects Supply Corp that was amazing! I don't know if it was their own concoction or what.
MUFE cosmetics??
I love wolfe white but not for covering large areas. I haven't tried paradise but I've seen it at the trade shows, I'll put that on my to-do list.
I like the Wolfe white and black for lining and smaller details. I had no good luck at all with Kryolan for coverage, for me it takes too much to get even coverage. So for large coverage with airbrush or kabuki I'm sticking with Mehron.
Kryolan provides fantastic coverage. But I found I had much better luck with it the better body painter I've become. While is's glycerin formulation make it easy to use it like all the makeups has a learning curve. I've since found it to hold up well through long hot photoshoots.
It's good enough for line work but will never have the ump in black like Wolfe or even Paradise - just different formulations.
I have never had Wolfe black stain the skin, and never heard it to have a reputation for staining. The greens and purples yes - but that's almost 90% of the brands. Wolfe with it's bit of beeswax in the formulation does settle into the pores, so it does require more to remove.
If using a Kryolan base and one can go say to Paradise for line work. I dislike Wolfe over Kryolan because of the formulations, Wolfe just slides over the Kryolan and doesn't stick. Wolfe works great over Paradise. And of course each brand over its self.
I like doing full bodies in Wolfe, and can get the blend and gradiate nicely. Paradise blends and can change hues well. Kryolan tends to not graduate as deep into the next color to much and it tends to muddy up.
As for shimmering effect (Mehron's) Paradise metallics are not even in my kit. Although I love Mehron's Metalic Powders. For "paint" Kryolan or Wolfe, and it depends on the effect. I love Kryolan but most likely will turn to Wolfe Metallixs first. I love to airbrush Kryolan's Airstream Pearls or Ice over Wolfe. Stunning effects.
How about sweat-proof factors on your favorite brands? I've been spraying either Aqua Net or Final Seal over Kryolan. Both seem to work just fine on the ladies but men seem to be able to sweat off anything!
I also noticed an ad featuring body paint on the back cover of national geographic. I can't find a picture though! It was a man washing off a painted shirt.
Edit: The body painted shirts are ads by Delta Faucets.
