THE CRUMP EFFECT

I have been a body painter for over ten years and I see every body painter having their own technique, style and skill. The world is full of some talented artists and people and I really like the progress that I have seen over the years in the body painting community.

I myself have used liquid latex in the past and now use primarily Mehron, Ben Nye and Wolf Brothers makeup products to do my body painting work.

What are your favorites and why?

Safety is also a concern. I see a lot of people using paints that probably should not be used on the skin. A few years ago in fact, I had a girl call me crying because two of her guy friends decided to paint themselves as robots. They had used Krylon Metallic SPRAY PAINT. Well the result was both got sick almost immediately and had to be rushed to the hospital.

She asked me what happened and the only thing i could figure is that they were looking up painting online or had asked someone and was told Kryolan which is a bodypaint, but either they got the spelling or pronunciation wrong and used the wrong paint, which had very bad effects. All because someone did not pay attention.

Do you have some experiences that you can share so that others may learn from them?

aaack spray paint.... I wondered if that would ever happen.. the brand names are so similar..

I was once asked by a photographer to pint a model with some left over CAR PAINT ... I luckily have a brain and said.. umm no....

Kids craft paints was also offered for me to use.. I said no.. not made for the skin..
I've seen 1st hand how this stuff can harm the skin, my son who is two was finger painting and got some blue on his arm, and i missed it when cleaning him up, it dried on his skin and caused a red rash and the skin was stained blue for about a week...

I've heard of house paint being used... umm Hello .. house paint is for houses... just cause its got the word "latex" in the title doesn't mean its the kind for the skin...

Craft store glitter is a favorite... seriously if you want rashes and scratches and possible eye ball damage.. fly at it...  the weird thing is most cosmetic grade glitter is inexpensive and much better quality and yet people still insist on cheeping out...

ohh i could go on and on and on... I'm sure a photographer or two will chime in and say that Im wrong and this stuff is perfectly safe and then this thread will get heated and then locked.. but Im willing to take that risk if it can educate one person its worth it...  smile

I use my own brand, krylon,FX,Snazeroo,Grimas, loose plastic glitter and I also mix pigments with "Make-up Forever" Mist n Fix... whatever is good for the job, most paint in cans (Spray) is lead based.... whoops... always read the contents and look for the poison mark! I actually teach Art and I am renowned in schools for my product knowledge... one of my major sponsors here in Australia is Derivan, the largest art suppliers in Australasia, and I'm always testing all their products for the "Fine Art" industry.

I also have a close relationship with many Make-Up Academies here in Australia... including one in Adelaide that specializes in MUF, my kit is worth $thoushands and I read what each produduct is made from... for instance Krylon Blacky is a brilliant product that is on sale everywhere but the U.S because it contains Parrafin... a petrolium product... it's not a worry anywhere else! I love all kinds of paint, each one has a purpose.... Oil and acrylic for Canvas and board, Enamal for metal and board, Sceenic paints for Murals.... the list goes on.... but alway's research a product before use... my next weeks job is to Guild a whole Body... and I will make my own Glue.... watch this space! smile

Depends on what the needs are.

For classic brush -
Mehron's Paradise AQ and Mehron's Metallic Powders
Wolfe FX and Face Art
Kryolan's Aquacolor

For airbrush -
Kryolan's Airstream
Mehron's LUX

My favorite brands because they work - top of the line brands all can produce vibrant color and are durable for photoshoots and performance work.  all a very differnt in their "feel".
What can someone learn from me about these paints - too much to fill a post!

Cosmetic glitter gets in the way for photoshoots - given there are only a few cosmetic glitter manufactures most brands are the same under private label.  Any brand is fine.

If you ask a body painter what type they like  most of them they will show you their closet filled with every type of paint imaginable. I think unless you a painter sponsored by a specific brand than you will want to try different colors of different paint.

All cosmetic grade though- no craft or acrylic.

I mix and match and then mix and match again. Mehron, Kryolan, Diamond FX/ Wolfe FX, Fantasy World Wide, Fardel, Grimas, Ben Nye and on and on.

I've also found that what works on one skin tone may not work on someone else. Some brands of paint also do not work well together (found this more with airbrush than pots)

Your best bet before you buy a bunch of paint you do not like is to go check out a convention or classes and test some out prior to purchase. People always say conventions are too expensive  but in the long run you won't end up with a closet of paint you hate that cost you thousands.

Do you ever have issues with certain colors of the Mehron Lux? It seems like the black clogs up my airbrush faaar more often than any other color I've tried...really frustrating!

OP, have her friends watch the episode of Mythbusters... they paint Kari and Jamie with metallic paint with a couple EMT's standing by.  Inhalants are dangerous, duh.  My bet is that it wasn't the spray paint on their skin that got them a cute wristband with their name on it, but rather them inhaling aluminum in a less-than-well-ventilated environment, causing an allergic reaction.

I saw one...but they were using liquid latex, and not actual bodypaint.
