JesseRphoto wrote: So I've been using my D50 for awhile now and have no major complaints. My plan after all the good info from this thread was to get the D7000. I am still planning on getting one but due to the really tight budget and picking up some other gear it probably wont happen for awhile
Now a question for the all knowing MM user...
I have the chance to pick up a D3100 at a very very good price. Since all this time has passed from original post does everyone still think that keeping the D50 is the better choice? Either way I will still continue saving for the D7000. Also if I decide to switch to the D3100 and get rid of the D50 I would practically break even.
Thanks again...
I upgraded from a D50 to a D7000 and I'm a very happy camper. The D50 was a nice little machine in its day but it's simply a victim of technological progress.
Be wary of the D3100 only for the fact that it has no AF motor in the body and may therefore not be compatible with lenses you have now or may wish to acquire in the future.

...and this is why I wish MM would lock all threads after 3 or 6 months of inactivity!!! Looking back at the earlier posts, the OP re-started this thread after nearly 2 years of it sitting idle. Apparently, he STILL has the D50 from his OP in Sept 2010!
As in most cases, it would have been better if he had just started a new thread instead!!

Yes, but it was the OP that bumped it. It isn't a necro-thread. He originally asked the question, did nothing and is now ready to upgrade. I noticed that it was an old thread as well. I wouldn't have replied had I not noticed that it was the OP that bumped it.

God advice, but I think it is outside his budget. Beyond that, I don't think his Tamron lens has a silent wave motor which means he would have to buy both a lens and a body.

No sense jumping into things with these new fangled contraptions.
Might as well wait another 10 or 15 years too see what might be a better choice then......
Sorry... Didn't realize I should have started a new thread. Since I was the OP and topic was similar.
The reason I haven't upgrade my body yet is because the money I was saving, I invested in other gear. Just happen to have the D3100 come my way and didn't want to pass it up if it was worth it to switch. When all is said and done I really wouldn't spend much at all to switch. I have 3 lens, 1 the 50 prime won't AF (figured I could sell and get the 1.8 with the SWM).
But I guess from what I'm reading I should just stay with the D50 and save. Now only if I could fit a 2nd job in my schedule ?:-)¿
Started with the D50 years ago. I now own both the D90 and D7000. I use the D90 with the 18-55VR in Studio and the D7000 with the 18-200VR for location shoots. If you are happy with the D50, you will love either of those 2 cameras.

In my opinion, the D3200 is worth the upgrade from D50.
Upgrading is a good idea, but don't trade, sell, or give away that D50. Here is why.
The D50 Synchs with flash at 1/500 (I think). But in reality, the D50 doesn't have a mechanical shutter at high speeds. If you put a Nikon flash (I use the sb600) on it, the last 2 sensors on the bottom of the flash shoe "tell" the camera that a flash is on, and not to shoot over 1/500 second.
If you put tape on those sensors, the camera will synch with the flash up to 1/4000 second.
I can't get it to work with my Pocketwizards, but the on camera flash will, of course, trigger other flashes with an optical slave.
I keep this camera in my closet, and have used it to shoot senior portraits when I want the background to go dark.

Most everyone agrees that "other gear" is at least as important as the camera body.

Sounds like a winner.
