So, how many of you noticed a model on MM that blew your mind away, and that you traveled a fairly big distance (out of state, internationally) because you really wanted to shoot with her?

(a thread I started out of boredom, but I am interested in your experiences as I currently have one woman that I can't get out of my mind loool)

I sometimes envy USA residents in that regard - most models fitting your description are in states..wink

Never have, Never would...
Its bad biz to waste money on travel when someone local can do the job.

Mainly because it's much easier to get between the cities than from Japan/Sweden to a particular city in states..wink Especially keeping if one has 9 to 5 job..wink

I shoot for fun and don't mind driving.  I've driven 15 minutes down the road and 2 hours to another state.  Whatever works smile

Maybe not quite the answer you are looking for buy yes and no.  I match a model to a location or type shoot.  If I have a location I really, really want, I find a model that I want to work with and I fly there.

But if there is a model I really, really want to work with just because of her look, I'll fly her to me.  Usually it's easier for her to pack one suitcase that it is for me to pack two camera cases and if it's a indoor shoot that plus the studio flash case, the light stand case, etc etc.

Worst part is when you really, really want to work with her and she doesn't respond to your email.

I do my best work in my studio. I've found models I've wanted to shoot in other cities like Chicago, but after researching what a typical studio rental costs (yikes!), I did the numbers and it's better to wait for a good deal on airfare, fly them in, put them up for a night and do the shoot. Luckily I live close to a big airport.

At least three times so far.

I've driven 600 miles round trip to work with some one I want to work with.

I've flown in a couple of models when that made more sense than me traveling a longer distance.

I'm very particular about who I shoot with. Generally my styling, my wardrobe my ideas, although I always value the models input and ideas.

Models aren't interchangeable to me.

When I first saw this image (18+ https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/2145260) I was struck by KatyT's work. I knew I wanted to work with her some day. Unfortunately travel to or from the UK wasn't in my budget.

Then she moved to Arizona, closer, but still out of reach.

So I had to wait until I saw that she was traveling to the Bay Area, which put her within 300 miles of me.

I saw a pic of a girl out on the west coast in somebody's port and thought "Wow, she's gorgeous! Would love to shoot her." But I'm in NYC so I never gave it a second thought. One day the same girl hits me up as a traveling model coming thru my area. Guess here's where I post a pic.

Literally in shock at the prices you guys must pay to shoot these models. Based on their hourly fees, airfare and lodging, im assuming you may be paying in the high hundreds or even thousands. Maybe its the fact that im just a hobbiest that does mostly portrait, but i dont see the point in paying so much for a shoot. Unless its for a publication your getting paid for or something you definitely need for your port, can some of you explain the justification in paying so much for a shoot.

The trips to Oregon and Montana were vacations, I just planned on doing a photo shoot in each location while I was there. I only paid $100 for each photo shoot, the rest of the expenses, gas, lodging, food, are simply vacation expenses.

How much can you spend to photograph a polar bear? Eiffel tower? Great Wall of China? Aurora Borealis? Same thing...

When I've flown a model in, her flight expense is her modeling fee to me. I encourage her to book other paying jobs while in town. She stays in my guest room, doesn't cost much to feed her for a few days, and I'll help her with transportation.

I'm a hobby shooter, and I know how to spend my money to get what I want. It's a cheaper hobby than the sailboat I used to have.

It amazes me the photographers who spend thousands on cameras, lenses  and lighting equipment but don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars to work with an experienced model, who can also do amazing things with MU and hair styling.

The Things Ive Seen

I just finished a 6 month road trip that started in Wisconsin, went northeast into Newfoundland Canada, all the way down the US coast, cross country across the southern states, up the west coast to Northern California, 2100 miles back to Wisconsin (in 34 hours) and then 2100 miles back to the Pacific Coast. Oregon to be specific.

I sold everything I owned and lived out of my car on whatever savings I had the entire time. I covered 33,000 miles. (The circumference of the earth at the equator is about 24,910 miles.)

Why?

Not to shoot with that one amazing model, but to shoot with as many of the amazing models as I could across the country. Maybe possibly to find "the one".
Because I have an unequaled passion and devotion, for better or worse, to what I do.

I'm not done yet either. I'm laying low for the winter, but next year I'm going to Alaska and Hawaii in that order, one week in each, back to back. After that I'm thinking 2-3 months in Europe. All for the sake of my art and the people I meet while creating it.

But one time in June 2010 I flew from Wisconsin to California to shoot with one particular person.

Very interesting discussion! If I had more money to spend on my modeling hobby, I would be traveling all over the place to meet up with photographers. I'm glad I get to travel for work all over the state so I can meet new photographers and shoot in places other than Austin where I live.

I've also shot with photographers who are vacationing here in town or have a conference. That's probably the most economical way to work with the model because you're already there! I mean, if the model is in some awesome town near a beach and you live in Montana, why not travel? You can get very different looks for your portfolio if you shoot outdoors for the most part.

Now, if you prefer a studio, I can see how travel might not be feasible. I have no idea what studios cost, but it can't be cheap. I end up doing a lot of shoots in my own house for that reason.

All that being said, I giggled a bit about the comment of flying the model out and having her stay in the guest room. How sweet! Also, that models don't cost much to feed. Like a puppy? Hahahaha! That cracked me up something fierce. I've noticed that terminology on mm frequently. I call it providing meals, but mm calls it feeding. In any event, I'd never make you feed me, as I am costly to feed. Like an ox.

There was this model that caught my eye ever since I joined MM in 2005. Thought she had a great look and wanted to shoot with her but never made contact. Out of the blue she contacted me this month asking if I would shoot her. I was smiling from ear to ear, luckily she was only an hour away. Shot with her last weekend, had a great shoot and she even bought me dinner. Kicking myself that I didn't reach out way back when.

Whaddya think it costs to play a round of golf on a first class course or keep up a fancy sports car?

Money is only a tool.

If you don't see the point in spending it, there's no way I can explain it to you.

I seen a model that worked with another photographer that I really really wanted to shoot with. He told me she was awesome to work with and I should jump at her if I ever had the chance. Well she finally made it up through Michigan but her timing could not have been worse because I was completely broke when she came through and could not swing a shoot with her.  sad

Nope can't justify the money I've spent to hiring models for my hobby. Then again can't justify the money that I spend on film and processing for my Leica M6 and Bronica SQ kits over the past couple of years or the money I've spent prior to that on various DSLRs and lens.  After all I'm not shooting for publication or getting paid so there's no real reason I shouldn't still be shooting with the Canon D30 I had 8 years ago when I started doing this or for that matter the camera in my cell phone smile

I am thankful people often fall in [photo] love with a model. Otherwise, I can't bridge the distance gap if they are financially not going to help accommodate the shoot.

If I had the money there are many models, photographers, sushi chefs, hair colorists, etc... I would bring to me from all around the world if I had the money. We all have soft spots for something/someone. DOING it is merely a reflection of financial ability and prioritizing it.

Can I ask why?

In light of the other thread that was started -- is it the subject or model -- I'm curious why you would do that?  Isn't that akin to stalking?

What about a specific model would make you want to travel/obsess to shoot with her?  What features or body mods?

Is it the _MODEL_ you are shooting, or the IMAGE you have in your head or mind's eye.  Why can't you use a local model?

These are all related to the core issues of what goes on here on MM.

I dunno.   I drove across three states and parked my car outside his apartment for three days.  But then the cops showed up for some reason.  Not sure when they're gonna let me out, but mebbe if my camera is still in the trunk I can get my shots eventually.  The food here sucks.
