K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid
These are the basics

Be on time. You have no idea how often this will get you complimented and rebooked. I pride myself on being on time or early. If you are going to be late, tell the producer or photographer as soon as you can

This is forever. Those pictures you took with a pseudonym will be found my someone close to you. Bear that in mind whenever you shoot. Do you want to be portrayed like this? Are you ok with it if your mom finds them? I made sure everything I’ve done would not make me ashamed when my family found them and they did find them

Take pride in yourself. Get your roots done, go to the gym, eat healthy. You’re selling a product and the product is you.

Networking sites: Be positive, be approachable and be friendly. People will not hire you based solely on your online persona, if you’re constantly bitching or posting negative things they will think you’ll do the same with their shoot and they will pass for a positive person.

Your reputation is all you have in this industry. This goes for everyone in the industry. If I hear from 4 people you are horrible to work with, I’ll pass on you.

Stick to your guns. If you don’t want to do something, you can say no and it is ok. Some may get mad, but who cares about them? Your limits are there for you not anyone else.

Elaboration

I started modeling when I was 19. Before that I had acted my whole life. I got moved to DC because I was sick and I needed a creative outlet. I did not start out doing nude work. It took months of consideration to even think that I would do it. Finally, I gave in. However, I gave in differently than most girls, I did not start out with, well, they will pay me. I started out with, if I’m going to get naked I want it to be with the best. So, I scoured my area and remembered Mickle Design Werks. https://www.modelmayhem.com/17644  That is his portfolio. I went in my first night and I shot nudes with him while Mosh get ready to shoot after me with him in the bathroom. I can remember being terrified of her because she was someone I looked up to. One thing turned into another and now he’s one of my closest friends in this industry. I need advice, I call him. However, it was a good business move for me to shoot with him first. He created beautiful images of me that opened up doors to other awesome TF opportunities and paid work. Remember this, people will hire you based solely on your portfolio and pay more for a pretty portfolio, than a crappily done one that makes them think you care more about money than creating a beautiful image for them.

Come a year or so later, and I quit my job. I was making more modeling than I was working. This may or may not happen to you, but if it does make sure you calculate out how much you need to make per month to survive. I know I have slow months, as do other girls. When these months happen what will you do? You still have rent and bills and food you need for survival. I can make enough in a weekend trip for that, but can you? This is a major thing one needs to think about before going full time.

Traveling. It seems funs, right? I mean traveling models get to see all these cool places right? That’s not true. For the most part, I shoot 4-12 hours a day, every day, I’m on the road. The most time I get off is in the evenings and it’s spent drinking wine with good friends I have met on the road. Some places all I see is a hotel room. I have overhead costs and I still need to make a profit. Let’s see here (bear in mind, I rent cars and such because I can afford too): My most recent L.A. Trip cost 400 for flight and 600 for a car for a week, so I need to make $1000 before I can even make a profit. It seems simple and easy, but sometimes work falls thru and things don’t turn out correctly. That’s ok, it happens, but try to make sure you can make enough to make a profit. I often negotiate rates depending on the market, like Upstate NY and such places. I don’t mind working more for a lower rate if it means I will still make a decent profit. Some places you need a car, L.A., TX, upstate NY, Milwaukee, Atlanta, FL. These places are spread out and photographers may or may not be willing to give rides. Also, ask them if they would mind giving you a ride before you assume they will do it. Assumptions are the worst thing you can do in this industry. NYC, DC, San Fran, and Philly are great for public transportation.

An ego is the worst thing you can have in this industry. You are no better than anyone below or above you. Remember that! You are replaceable, there are twenty other models with similar looks and features. This means you need to be enjoyable to work with, so you get hired and re-hired. It’s simple, make people like you and you’ll work.

Posing and such, practice in a mirror. Watch what you eat and go to the gym. It will all work out. Don’t let those who insult you bring you down. Be proud of who you are. This industry will give you a weight complex or make you think you’re not good enough if you let it. Be your own cheerleading squad. Don’t get plastic surgery to be a model, do it because you want to. And if you’re even thinking about plastic surgery, I recommend getting anything wrong with your teeth fixed first. You would not believe how much more I get booked now that I have an amazing smile.

People who you thought loved you unconditionally will leave you. Being nude on the internet or in magazines is taboo. Some will stay and some will go. I lost my ex fiance because I decided to pose nude. I lost my ex boyfriend because he disapproved of bondage. It is what it is. If you are ok with what you’re doing, let them leave. You don’t need someone in your life who makes conditions on their love for you. My dad’s still here and my family is, even if they don’t approve of what I do, they leave me be. We talk about things other than work when I’m around. They still love me. That is what people should do. My boyfriend now goes to shoots with me, has seen most of my content and knows what I do. I was upfront about it all and he told me the things he could not deal with me doing. He also said he just could not date someone who did it, but he would still be in my life. That’s pleasant to know.

This industry will eat you alive if you let it. The rumors are abundant, the talking behind the back is there, sometimes it’s like high school all over again. Don’t listen to it. You do what you do and if people don’t like it, ignore them. Your limits will be pushed. It’s up to you to say no. There is nothing wrong with that. The producer or photographer may make you think there is something wrong, but they’re not saying that for your benefit, but for yours. I started out doing glamour, moved to simple bondage and fetish, and then strenuous bondage, and am back doing glamour, and pretty fetish work. I tried everything I did based on what I wanted. I never cared about a paycheck, I did what made me happy and as long as I’m happy, that’s all that matters.

+1 to be on time. after you've been burned a few times you start to stress if the model is late. i appreciate the models who text me saying "i'm on the way" or "had to stop for gas" and some photographers won't start setting up for the shoot until they have confirmation that the model is en route.

and +1 for ashley. back at the beginning the wife let me book some traveling models and they were all amazing.

Modeling is easy if you don't want to build a career out of it, just model for fun and get pretty pictures.

If you want to build a modeling career, then listen to Ashley.

I don't plan on ever making a career out of this, but there is nothing easy about standing for hours when you get painted, or hold the most uncomfortable position while smoldering at the camera or falling out of a tree or having to untease your hair for an hour after it was made to stand on end.
i've frozen my butt off and dragged it around town early on weekends..not really easy
but i do love it

This is great advice! You seem to be a very confident and clear headed woman.

I like the bit about the teeth part, I wonder if that gets overlooked by models sometimes in favor of other enhancements, ie boobs, nose. I'm getting ready to do mine, it's the only cosmetic thing I'll probably ever do. Refused to get braces, darn my stubborn child self!

That's because you're a serious model even if you're not making a career out of it. A lot of models are serious about creating art even if it's not a career for them - it's an artistic outlet for them.

Now if you just stand there and smile for the camera and get nice pics for FB, that's easy but definitely not a serious model.

Chem? Please. I've taken harder classes than that. And I'm sure there are people who've taken harder classes than I've taken.

Stop patting yourself on the back. If you don't have anything to add, then just let it go already. It's obvious you are just a hobby model.

In fact, judging by the bulk of your posts on other threads. You're combative and just like disrupting important topics.

Have fun with that.

Try posing in front of a large-format camera for five or six hours.  Or, as Elizabeth said, hours and hours for a painter...for one pose.  Ashley is giving excellent advice for models.  If you have any interest at all in modeling (even as a hobby), it would behoove you to pay attention to this advice.  You may not need ALL of it, but you can be assured that at least SOME of it will serve you well in modeling.

*edit*  It looks like you're agency-represented, which probably means you're an aspiring rock star model.  The OP applies even more, unless you think you know it all.

I am here to say that Ashley lives what she is saying here. I've shot her a couple times now and she has been amazing. Very professional at all times. She was a little behind schedule for one of the shoots but she let me know about it in an adequate amount of time. The guy who shot her before me was late finishing and she was on the other side of town. I was able to adjust my schedule for her so there was no problem. I will also say that she got away easy with me. Both shoots were indoors with no pain giving methods used. I have done figure shoots outdoors in 22 degree weather. The girl I was shooting with (Also a traveling Figure Model), was terrific and didn't complain either.

It's no problem Ashley.

I wish all the models near me were this outspoken, it would certainly help in selection when you are booking a casting call.

Good read.  I can't remember a time I was late to a shoot.  One advice for that is if you are stuck in traffic or something like that, call the photographer and let them know in advanced if you are going to be late.  That's why I always try to get phone numbers for that reason.  One photographer and I didn't exchange numbers and I was going to shoot with him in Richmond and there was construction on I-95 so I remembered we were emailing each other, so I used my phone to e-mail him and let him know.  So, be sure to exchange numbers before the shoot in case something happens.

I shot with Mickle Design Werks last week.  He is so much fun and laid back.  I am extremely proud that I got to shoot with him.  I shot nude with him as well.

Its a shame that Miss Shei felt the need to take over what should otherwise be a useful, educating thread for newer/inexperienced models.

I guess that is one of the things that goes with the attitude topic the OP mentioned.

I kinda of think that was her point, after reading all the other "flake threads" around the forums. Photographers seem to always ask why, and never get a good answer.
