I love doing wildlife rehab. But this year has started off rough.
I have bunnies dying, which is normal. I hate it but it happens, the little, weak ones that would do ok with mom don't make it in rehab.
We got the first baby squirrel in, he did fine but suddenly got a skin infection which took over his little body. He died.
Now, I got a phone call and picked up 3 baby fox squirrels. MY FAVORITE!! I love these little buggers. They are hilarious and adorable to watch. I got them cleaned up and fed pretty quick. They were in worse shape than I thought. With dirt in their mouths mama had been gone for too long and they were eating dirt they were so hungry. One baby died today, in my daughters arms. she took it so hard. Which is not normal for her.
Now, I get home from work. Neither squirrel baby is interested in formula (I think one is dying) and 2 bunnies are dead.
I had a shitty night at work and just want to scream.
I blame Mother Nature and the early spring/warm weather fucking with not only our animals but us.
Sorry. I just had to get that out. Now that I did with some tears I feel a bit better.
I'll post the squirrel pics in the morning, my phone is in the car & I'm not getting it.
There are going to be some that don't make it no matter what you do or how hard you try. But remember, there are also many that are only alive because of your efforts, and be proud of your successes.

Yeah, their mouths were full of dirt. When mama has been gone awhile they will eat whatever they find. They eventually started climbing the people that found them-that is desperation. They were out raking the yard when they looked down and saw the babies on their pant legs. They were skin and bones, literally. You could feel ribs and spine- not to mention dehydrated.
Here are the photos, I can't remember what order they go in.
When the babies started dying my daughter named them. I NEVER name wildlife!! But, she was holding them and crying when they were dying and said they needed names.
George was the boy, Rose was the girl (the ones who died) the one that is still alive she says is Roxy. I still tell her I am not calling them names. They are better off nameless!
