I have seen it, and it is great. Comparisons with the Dark Knight are absurd, like comparing jazz classics against pop classics. Different animals, this movie is pop. Simple, light-hearted story told intelligently. It is all about the characters, their personalities, their interactions. Amazing talent, skills and sensibility by director and actors to make this material credible and avoid camp territory.
Viewers are leaving the theatre blown away and they keep discussing and quoting the movie days after seeing it. I know of people who have seen it twice or even three times already. The hype has been huge, but it is real. This movie is single-handedly going to create a whole new generation of geeks and fanboys and guarantee the production of more superhero movies for the next ten years.

1. Story is terrible. Not creative at all. No twist, no surprises, and at times it makes no sense. It isn't even in the same league as The Dark Knight which barely cracked 1 billion.
2. It doesn't have the female demographic. If you look at the top 20 movies off all time only 3 weren't strong with the female audience. Females especially young females carry movies. Ask The Hunger Games creators and Stephanie Meyer
3. Already bootlegged to death. I know 5 people that have bootlegged it and don't plan to see it. That's a problem.
4. Unless you are a SERIOUS fan then you really have no reason to see it more than once. I saw Dark Knight twice as well as Captain America and Thor. Zero desire to see Avengers again.
You never know how people are going to react when it comes down to it but I don't think given the factors above that it can keep up the steam it would need to crack a billion. The Dark Knight Rises? Oh yeah. That and several other big movies are going to cut into it's target audience. SpiderMan, Prometheus, The Expendables 2, The Bourne Legacy, Total Recall, and to a lesser extent MIB 3. This is a big guy movie year. Crap now I'm super excited. lol
HUH? Avengers by this weekend alone...will make 500 million..Worldwide!!! And you say it will make between 800 to 900 total? Yeah..you keep thinking that!!! LOL

I admit that I do enjoy good special effects. I'm an engineer & a computer scientist, and I like the application of sophisticated computer effects to create a good spectacle.
An ensemble movie, like the Avengers, is another thing altogether. With so many "stars", each star will need its own. Thus, one can expect that the plot lines will get diluted as the director has to squeeze in screen time for each "hero" (star). That also tends to distort the plot lines, too -- the more unrealistic the plot devices, the less "believable" the action.

No idea where you're getting you're number sbut it's at 260 and projected 175 ish. Close to 500 but big difference between 435 and 500. Potter did 476m Worldwide to be the biggest ever. This ain't no Harry Potter. It was the final installment, well made, had a FAR larger audience, and driven by FEMALES. Potter was a better movie in every single way. It did 1.3 Billion.
With that said records are made to be broken and the above having seen the movie a week ago led me to believe what I posted. Don't buy the hype. I see people calling for a 200 million weekend. Hell I don't think theaters can hold that many people. lol. We shall see come Monday. It's going to be work for it to crack a billion. A big opening doesn't always mean a big ending. Hell I hope it does very well so Whedon can get to work on a script that actually lets ALL the characters have some damn dialogue. lol

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Avengers is opneing in more overseas markets this weekend including Russia and China, with projected international box office predicted to pass $400 million by this weeked. Based on pre-sold tickets and tracking US box office is projected at $170 million this weekend.
Just saw it and it KICKS ASS!!! One of the better movies I have seen in a long time! I was seriously laughing the whole time....Robert Downey Jr and the Hulk stole are the best

Pretty much the same, I was seriously amazed at all the good one liners there where in that movie.

saw it yesterday, and loved it. Some little things that bothered me, but I loved the witty dialogues, the great one liners, the action fighting scenes (and the cinematography of it) and the awesome special effects, that made me gasp for breath sometimes because it looked SO realistic!
I've never been a fan of the hulk movies but the hulk was so great in this one, and so funny!

I am not just talking about here in the US...I am talking about worldwide.....which includes the US....YOU...say it will make 200 million this weekend..IS that here? in the US? Because it has broken the 200 million mark easy overseas...WORLDWIDE......I will keep you posted...but They...Hollywood Reporter say this flic will make 500 million no problem..United States and Worldwide...
Fun, intelligently humourous (thank you Joss Whedon!) and the 3D was done really well. Of course, Iron Man is going to get some of the best lines, but The Hulk was probably the funniest of them.
So totally worth it.
As for the people saying it won't have the female demographic. I have four words: Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans. *swoon* Serious eye candy.

/sigh. Did you even read my post? Fairly sure I stated in my response to you more like 435 million. 175 domestic. I just don't see it beating Potter. Again, the beauty of this is we shall see Monday and by the end of July. I could be wrong as I said. No telling what people decide to do. I don't understand why people like Twilight. lol
In the Overseas Market..The Avengers has broken the 300 million dollar mark. And this weekend..it is being released in China and Russia....plus the US.

550? or more?
It must be doing well, if people like myself can get persuaded (by own child) to plop money and go see it, even though the only words from the whole story known to me are "marvel" and "hulk". Gonna
Just saw it today and I agree, it was great! If you liked Iron Man (either one of them) then you'll enjoy the hell out of this movie.
I will say this, I think Iron Man 1 & 2 as well as Thor are prerequistes for this one. Even though Thor wasn't as good of a movie IMHO, there are several characters from that one that play important rols in The Avengers, and there's some important information from Iron Man 2 that also helps set up his character.
Captain America I never saw and I don't feel like I missed anything. There's a brief flashback sequence that pretty much covers what you need to know. (though I'll probably go back and watch it now lol)
Hulk... well what more do you need to know other than he's a mild mannered doctor that turns into a giant green monster when he gets angry? And let's be honest, if you don't already know that much going in, then The Avengers is probably not for you!
While Robert Downey Jr has some of the funnier lines...the Hulk just has some of the funniest scenes.
As with anything else Joss Whedon puts his hands on...it's funny without being dumb, smart without being boring, and just an all around fun ride. Full of subtle things that don't NEED to be in it...but really add up to make it a great movie.

As written on page 2:
"As for the Avengers, Marvel was very smart with what they did. The previous movies; Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and yes, even the Hulk, were character set up films. In other words, many people don't know jack regarding these characters from the comic books and to try and create a back story for all of them in just one film was asking way too much. So what Marvel did was introduce each character on their own, back story and supporting characters so when people went in to see The Avengers, they could step in feet first without a problem.
This was magnificent planning because movie goers now have an emotional interest in the characters. Many MANY years to reach the culmination of The Avengers, but man, I really have to give Marvel major props for taking their time with this. Absolutely brilliant! "

Thanks for the recap, but I caught all of that the first time around. And I agree.
What I was trying to say was for anyone wondering if they needed to see ALL of the other films before watching The Avengers, that they didn't HAVE to. All of those stories are there, yes, to fill in backstories and whatnot. But you can really do without seeing Captain America and the Hulk if you still wanted to see the Avengers right now and not feel lost.
However, if you skip Thor and Iron Man (part 2 in particular) I think you may feel a bit lost with some of the characters and events that are refrenced to in the movie.
There are a lot of people, as you mentioned, that are very casual fans of these movies and may have only caught one or two of the previous ones... the others just not generating an interest in them. Maybe they don't feel like watching all of them. Maybe they would like to see The Avengers, but are afraid they may not understand what's going on because they didn't see all of the others... and don't want to.
For those people, I was trying to explain that they can get away with not watching Captain America and the Hulk and still follow what's going on, but I think Iron Man and Thor would be important to see.
So am I alone in saying theres no way in hell im going to waste my time and money on this movie? I Loved the first Iron Man, hated the 2nd, walked out on Capt America, didnt care for Thor, I just cant justify spending money to see these characters together in 1 movie, but then again I was always a DC over Marvel fan during my comic book collecting phase

IMO, Capt. America and Thor were unwatchable and boring. Lucky me, I didn't buy to see these movies.

You have zero reason to see this film with all this.
