Ok -- so the contest was called "Adios, Green Couch. Design MM's New Banner!"

The winning design is barely different than the old one AND is also.... ON A GREEN COUCH??!!

You should have just called it "Adios, Green Couch... Hola, Green Sofa".

The new couch is more of a bluey green.

I love the new banner. The combination of design and model (yeah Mosh) are IMHO perfect for M.M.

Question ...

Wasn't the guidelines for the banner to use the same font as on the old banner? Also the same font of the new #1 pick?

If that's correct, then the runner up would not be the runner up.

Anyway, I can't really say that I like one much better than the other for the previous and the two top selections.

Surprisingly, I had expected something much more stunning, even though graphics is my short-suit. Basically it's just part of a cropped head, and seems like a banner for a band or musix website.

Something more horizontal like the crop of a model's side profile across the horizon may have been more eye-catching and on theme.

LIKE THIS

http://www.fhm.com/imgs/630/500/0/origi … -side.jpgx

But like where the lower part is sliced off to get the figure and outfit across more of the banner.

;-)

I saw the link at the top of the page titled "Model Mayhem Banner Contest Winner!" and clicked on the link to see who won.  I didn't even realize that the winning banner was already at the top of the page, because it was so similar to the old one.  If I had known this is what the Administrators were looking for, I would not have taken the time to submit an entry.  I didn't join MM because of the way the old banner looked and doubt anyone else did as well.  Congratulations to the winners and runners up.

Its a great image, but seriously why the need for a couch again at all.  Should we also worry that the winning team won a 5 year VIP and we should expect to look at another green couch for 5 more years....

We have a winner! The judges sorted through hundreds of submissions, got into many arguments, and got into even more arguments.

In the end, however, the contest boiled down to two favorites.

Based on the criteria of “creativity, originality, aesthetic appeal, continuity with current site banner, and clarity”, the judges picked this banner as the winner.

MichaelO is the photographer/digital artist, and Mosh is the model. Congrats, MichaelO and Mosh! Together they win 5 years of free VIP membership.

Running a close second was this entry by digital artist Matthew Lane and model Yelena21. (Image by photographer KARELEA) Together they win 1 year of free VIP membership.

Many thanks to all who participated and offered their visions as to what Model Mayhem will look like. We’re excited about the change.

I guess something in line with the website theme was not the goal.

I really do like the new banner, and Mosh is the ultimate internet modeling representative, but I think it is misleading (Especially in the age of Pandora).

It fits more as the Model Mayhem Music Forum banner.

No complaints here, because... Mtv used to be about Music.

Just saying...

I prefer the second choice. It much better and more brand able in my opinion. The other looks like a head phone or music service commercial.

Also you choose someone wearing headphones over a pair of beautiful eyes when photography is a visual medium and this site from what I have seen has no music??????

Not only that the blue eyes would have tied in with the colors on the rest of the site template. I see no green anywhere sorry but I prefer the old one to this.

Too bad we dont have a way to choose what banner we want to see in settings for the paying members.

Bad choice in my opinion, it does not represent what the site is about, or work well with the color theme and is dark. #2 ties in, represents a visual medium and has a lighter vibe to it.

MichaelO is great I just don't think it fits the site. You should just ask a different top artist to create a banner every month and feature a story on them as well.

Personally I like the new banner as I feel it's a modernised version of the old banner which I like for flow.

Who cares if she's wearing headphones? No one is trying to sell you headphones.

There's no visually pleasing way a banner could show everything MM offers without literal images of those things (a tripod etc.).

Congratulations to the winners!

Sounds like more than one person mentioned the headphones.

But going back to modernization, it seems that modernized in the context of a site with model / photographer interaction being the most prolific, would show technology. Not a lot about posing becomes modernized. But camera's, software and lighting equipment have evolved.

So no modernization seems evident. It did change though, with a replacement. That's for sure.

Exactly.  It is called branding.  This was a complete change, yet continuing the brand.  To change it to something radically different would have been to trash the brand.

Michael O is a genius.  He is a god...

The image (Matthew's) is very nice, but would have further eroded the brand.

Model mayhem has already gone down drastically and there are a million copy cats now.  The brilliance of the new banner is it is a change to something better, but it maintains the brand.  Though Matthew's image is beautiful, it looks like one of the knock off sites.  It would have been a very bad move to have changed to that image.

Historically, there's no solid evidence that radical change trashes a brand.

I think that the Corvette design groups of the 50s to 70s clearly show radical changes, especially the body style of the Stingray. Yet the Corvette remained a famous name. Likewise with the T-Bird.

What you are referring to may be more applicable regarding trademarks and logos. It's logos that generally don't change much as at. But when it comes to website design, it's standard successful practice these days for huge major overhauls to design and graphics.

And with websites, it's bad navigation that really tarnishes a brand. As far as Model Mayhem goes, it's easy navigation, though archaic, is one of it's strongest and appealing features.

I use reams of forums and other websites, and Model Mahem is one of the most user friendly I encounter, considering it's multiple features. I've seen new copy-cat sites, and their navigation is several steps backwards regarding ease.

******************

RE the new banner though ...

Bet if all us viewers could see all the submissions, it would be even more clear why the final choices were picked.

Like I said before I like the new banner...but.....

Maybe on the next banner contest...They would allow the community to vote. Me and You. Leave the MODS out..and all sofas.

How long will this new banner stay up? 5 years?

Where's the challenge, the drive, the energy? This banner reminds me of a 1980's stereo TV ad. Nothing original here.

Honestly, i like it.
i think it's cool that it's so similar to the old one, but with a dark, kinda sexy twist. mosh is a great model, and the photographer did a great job capturing her. I like the slight changes. And yes it looks like an ad for a dj or music sharing site, but it still works for model mayhem in my opinion. :] and i think a lot of the people who replied are being too negative. it's a killer shot.
great job to everyone involved.

There were a lot of great banners but this one in my mind was the clear winner.  Got rid of the ugly sunglasses but kept the trademark style.  I think they did a great job.  Mosh is beautiful and great photography.

Of course I think mine with a wife beater, railroad tracks, and caution tape would have won if the model hadn't flaked and my cell phone battery hadn't died.

Hell, the old one was more "fashion" than this!

To be honest, not much fashion left on MM, Glamour Mayhem, seems to have the fashion folk on the run
outta here, lacing up.

Rik we all know you mean the photographer flaked, and we set that up so you couldn't enter a pic of yourself in a wife beater!

I agree with this even though I like the fact that it's "darker" and has a grittier tone. Then again I generally prefer photos that have a "darker" feel to them.
High gloss glitz is overrated. Give me darkness and grit anyday!
