First of all, the Engrish seems weird. That's my first red flag. But, whatever, I humored the person and emailed them. I got this response:

The whole paying before we shoot thing coupled with the Engrish makes me feel like this is a classic Nigerian prince scam. Does anyone else have any experience with this person or a similar message? I just started actively using Model Mayhem a month or two ago, so I wasn't sure if the scam artists had become this clever yet. Any input is greatly appreciated!

If you got sent this through MM then contact a MOD and report them
Yep a scam, if you fill it out they will mail you a fake check, that they want you to cash and wire transfer the money. The check will bounce a few days later and you'll probably get arrested for illegal transaction internationally.
I literally just received the exact email from a guy named George. I replied to see if it was legit. Well now I know that entire thing was fake!! His page was taken own also.... So glad I didn't receive anything yet!

Scam clue number 1 although they like your folio, they don't seem to know your name
Scam clue number 2 although they like your folio, they can't read your bio to get basic info like dress size height etc
Scam clue number 3 although they like your folio, they don't know what you look like and need you to list your hair colour eye colour etc.
Scam clue number 4 although they have discovered you from a website, know nothing about your honesty or reliability they will send you money upfront
Scam clue number 5 although they have discovered you from a website, and know nothing about your honesty or reliability they want you to pay the crew on their behalf
Scam clue number 6 although they have discovered you from a website, and know nothing about your honesty or reliability or styling skills they expect you to come up with outfits to suit their project.
There's plenty more but you should get my drift.........
There was nothing whatsoever clever about this e-mail. Anyone that suspends their excitement for a moment and engage their brain would realise the whole scenario they are proposing is incredibly ludicrous.
I received the same exact thing, but I already deposited the check into my bank account, the check is still pending until tomorrow... I don't want to get in trouble for something I didn't know was a scam. What should I do?

Go to your bank tomorrow morning when it opens. Don't call; go in person. Tell them you deposited a check and have since discovered that it is fraudulent and you were an unwitting participant in a scam.
The check is fake and will not clear, even if the bank lets you have the money.
Did you already send money on by Western Union? If so, then it's gone. Just don't make any payments on the rest of the money as it will be removed when the bank discovers the check is fake.

While I do sympathize with you, I'm astounded that anyone in this day and age falls for this scam anymore. Hell, I was shocked that anyone fell for it when the scam first started, but seriously? You really fell for this? Wow. Just wow.

90% of the time, if they can't write half-proper English, they don't have a job for you.
Also, NEVER trust anyone who wants to give you a check and have you pay people out... why would they trust someone they don't know to do that? They wouldn't.

It's a scam. First, a genuine offer would not ask if you were "interested in modeling for your photos", followed by something that implies your picture will be all over the world (even Santa Clause will see your photo right outside his workshop!). Second, there are run-on words, should be spaces after punctuation marks, and phrases that don't make sense. Third, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.
I never got one of these on MM but I received something similar in email.... My Cambodian uncle just passed away and left me with his 13.5 trillion dollar fortune.

Scams like this work because people want to desperately believe they have been discovered. At last! The offer of money seems fair to them. All part of the magic of being discovered.
That these still work is that algorithimically, the scammer only needs a one in one-thousand hit through emails. The email just has to hit at the right emotional time for certain marks.
A person may resist a modeling scam but fall for an investment scam, at times due to emotional needs.
A friend of mine, a wise man, almost believed a scam he showed. He wanted to believe in it. It seemed like a lucky break.
I recognised it as a very sophisticated scam but one that would most likely net someone who felt they deserved a great investment opportunity.
It uses the lure of info about the intended victim, about their business reputation, in order to appeal to ego, and the additional lure: the wish to believe in good luck.
I am not surprised that people fall for scams. I am outraged by scammers and feel so sorry for victims.

It was one more talking about animal photos as a $1400 job. I accidentally deleted that one. A tip that I've seen is that most of these companies do not have an avatar and if they do, they only have 5 photos and a regular account. Whenever a company with this kind of money is trying to seek people, you would think they would have a VIP account. They also ask me the same questions as above. They are trying to do identity theft as well as send you a forged check which will then bounce and leave you footing the bill. This is called the Nigerian Scam. So understand that most companies will not search the site, find you, pay you in advance through mail, then have you purchased plane tickets, hotel rooms, etc. Major companies will always pay for everything and have them reserved and ready for you to pick up. You will be paid after the shoot is finished "in person". Do not get scammed my fellow MMs. I hope this helps.
I just got one. While, like many others, I'd hoped it was true, but I'm not gullible enough to believe EVERYTHING I read lol
so I googled the return e-mail and this forum came up...glad I'm smart enough to at least look into something before getting all giddy.
I used to email these guys back and "negotiate" with them. Got one guy to offer up 12 million dollars out of the 20 million instead of the 10 million he wanted to give me. My last email to him was "Why would I bother doing this for only 12 million when I already have 15 million in the bank?".

My favorite one wanted to hire me as a glamour model, for $3,000 a day. That's a lot of money for non commercial modeling, even if I wasn't a 55 year old bald guy.

I love that he claims to represent "Nike sport wears" and then provides an email for "heineken.shooting."
This type of scam is everywhere. A couple of weeks ago I actually received a phone call scam. The woman said I had won a $10,000 grant from the "American Government" because I had paid my taxes on time. Of course she could barely speak English and couldn't tell me what agency the money was coming from. Just kept saying American government and asking for my name.
