I want to do makeup full-time, or at least part-time.  How do i get more business? I'm a stay at home mom, so i do have extra time to do makeup. I live in a small town 30 min from Indianapolis, in.  I plan on moving to LA, i want to do makeup there for television, film, and print. Right now i do makeup for print, and weddings. I have done one commercial. I don't know if there is no work out here, or if i'm not getting contacted much due to my small portfolio.  Anyone have any advice for me? Also, do i need to go to school in order to do makeup for film in LA? Or do you just get lucky to get a job like that, i just don't know where to start, or where to go to live out my dream of being an artist!

Here's a recent similar post that I and several others commented on:

Check out the Hair & Makeup FAQ, too - lots of good advice for getting started, schools, etc. Your priority right now should be building a marketable portfolio.

Here is what I can tell you: there are a couple of ways to make inroads in this business. Find someone who is a senior artist who is getting booked on the types of jobs that you want to do eventually. You should approach them about interning. It is going to be free work, it may not be exciting and it can be hard. You will learn a lot from them while working on your network of artists. Almost all of the jobs that I get come from other makeup artists and I've met them through a combination of assisting/interning. The bonus of all of this is they are some cool peeps that I call friends now. The other way is to come up with a solid marketing plan, get some coins together and work on building your brand in your area. Contact production companies with your comp card, business card and physical portfolio. Work with wedding planners, bridal shops, photographers and other wedding vendors to partner together.

While you are working on that you need to test, test and test more. If you are doing bridal set up some bridal tests to expand your portfolio. You are only as good as your weakest image. Just when you think that you have tested enough take a small break and start all over again. Trust me you always need better work. It will take you a while to get images that are timeless and you can keep them around for years to come.

In regard to moving to LA I am not 100% sure how the film industry works out there. I can tell you how is works here in NY. To get on the big budget films you have to be in the union. That isn't the only way but that is the way that you should focus on. In order to get into the union you need a certain number of days working in film/tv that are documented to apply. This can take a few years. In order to get those days you work on student films (no pay) then start working on shorts (low pay) and move on to indie feature films (pay varies usually low pay or free). Keep all of the pay stubs and call sheets when you have enough time you apply. I will say this - film days are looooooong. It isn't for the faint of heart or for people who have great and healthy social lives. LOL

I'm not sure if school is mandatory to join the union someone else can chime in on that.

Here's some things you need to know if you plan on doing film and tv work

You need to know fx - basic out of kit fx as well as full on prosthetic application
The LA union s extremely hard to get into and will cost you about $6,000 to join .
You need film experience, start with student films , then indies...save all call sheets and pay stubs.
You need a website so people can find you, with clean wearable everyday looks, a reel of your film work would be ideal .

My advice when you move to LA attend an fx school there they have some of the best. Just do your research .

And to be brutally honest you need more work, your goal should be your portfolio right now replacing old work with new better work. Remember the movie field of dreams, if you build it they will come, if you make a great sellable portfolio the work will come, of course I'm oversimplifying, it's hard long work .
