Just wait for the spear-gun haters and the 'NSGA' (National Spear Gun Association) to step in tongue

It's quite mad how anyone could survive that much. I remember hearing of a guy who was hit through the head with javelin, but that went more or less down the body rather than through the skull.

I'd have thought the BBC would've checked their sources first...

Holy fudge. I hope nothing important was lost from his memories. How do you accidentally shoot your friend in the head with a spear gun!? It's incredible that he survived.

Brutal story... I first heard about Gage through a PBS Nova episode. Grisly.

I wouldn't have believed it either, but I saw the video on CNN yesterday.

Thank god he is a US teenager, if had been a kid from any country with a decent education system the spear would have hit his brain.

Similar thing happened to Steve Martin once.

Yet another reason Javelin catching is not a popular sport.

That scar on his cheekbone was from a Somali spear that punched through his skull and out the other cheek. He got away from the fight with the spear still stuck through his head (smashed back teeth and palate). Tough mofo.

This is why we don't shoot spear guns at our friends!

It's also why we keep our finger off the trigger until we're ready to shoot, and even then, don't point the thing in the direction of our friends.

BUT if you're going to shoot a spear into your friend's head, just make sure there's a sea otter nearby. They're experts at getting things off of spearheads.

In Monterey Bay, California, I once shot a ling cod through the head, with a toggle-headed spear. The toggle flattened upon entry and opened back up once through the fish. It made it impopssible for the fish to shake itself off the spear and took a bit of dexterity for a human to get the fish off the spear.

Unknown to me and my dive-buddy, an otter was hovering over my shoulder, waiting for me to shoot the fish. As quickly as I shot the fish, the otter zoomed in, worked the fish off the toggle-head, flashed us a nasty snarl, and took off with the fish.

I want that critter in the ER if I ever get speared through the head.

Exactly.

This is why bullets were invented.

Him and Speake were definitely bad mofo's!

Hope this kid makes a full recovery. It sounded like he will.

Wow crazy. I wonder because he hasn't totally developed his brain yet, how his personality is going to turn out. You know biological/nero-psychologists are going to be eating this up and studying this kid every day of his life...
