BUT, I never put any of that into consideration it's just something I've noticed. I've worked with photographers who have their photo up and I've worked with some who don't. The advantage is, I now know what to look for when meeting on location. No having to ask random people if they're the photographer:p
It's always great hearing different viewpoints. Good idea on not having to ask random people...etc.

Unless you're a nude male model, nude pictures of yourself in your portfolio is a huge red flag for me.

It's easier knowing what you look like if I'm meeting on location, but is completely unnecessary.
Crap! I guess we'll never be able to work together.
Seriously, I send a picture of myself right before meeting/shooting so that the model knows whom to look for out of a crowd.
I think that's a good idea. Just as an FYI if nothing else. I may do that when we get to emailing. Or I'll put a ME folder in my profile and post amazingly PhotoShopped images of myself.

I have my photo in my Bio and website, it helps people to recognise me. I've also been told at shows or meet ups, it makes me more "approachable" to strangers and makes it easier to link me with my work.
I think its cool to know what the photographer looks like. It gives you a feel for their personality so you're in the right mind-set for the shoot before you get there.
I do like to know with what face i'll be working with. I'm a HUGE planner and would like to know every single detail before a shoot. A face just shows off what kind of person I'll be working with (sort of). And it's always usefull to know whom I need to look for when stepping out of a train..
No. No nudity, please. Not unless it's for an entirely separate nude concept that you wanted to execute yourself and were sharing as a completely separate thing. Otherwise, please don't post a nude picture up for my sake as a nude model.
I have a pic of me on my port, but models notice it rarely. But the truth is none of models I worked with from Mayhem required photos of me as a condition to shoot.
I am fat and fifty, and I think any tog who posts his picture, or any girl who wants to see it is stark raving bonkers! And even if I was young and hot,I still would have the same position!

It just felt weird communicating with someone whose avatar was someone else - a kind of disconnect. That was my own perception, so nobody else has to do it that way. I use my self-portrait as my avatar for that reason.

EDIT: I realize the OP was asking for the opinion of models, but, you know, this is Model Mayhem !
I prefer not to see the photographer - I don't like the idea that I might subconsciously judge a book by its cover.
It is however, as many have said, useful before meeting in a public place. I've had a situation where both of us waited almost next to each other for 5 minutes before realising.

Plus... when I'm testing out new equipment, I don't always have someone around to shoot, so I have to make due with myself (testing 900ws strobe, gridded 60" octa, and 100mm f/2) - I like it so it's my new "me" picture
I don't care what you do to test your gear, just don't inflict it on the rest of us! Plus which, I am usually the bloke wearing a camera!

This is me,
This shoot was originally not for public consumption, but as an empathy building exersize; I was not comfortable asking a model to do something I was not prepared to try myself, so I started shooting myself to get a handle on the style. This image turned out well enough that I choose to share it publicly. I have no problem sharing an image of myself but on MM with only 15 photo slots, I leave most of my self portrait pics on RedBubble, http://www.redbubble.com/people/dagger133
I would love to put up a shot of me. But I hate being in front of the camera. Thats why I shoot instead. Plus I don't have any good ones of myself. Craig

But to be honest I prefer to work with photographers I don't find attractive. Don't feel very comfortable workin with hot ones.
So technically if you want to work with me I should be flattered that you like my work....and if you don't want to work with me I can still walk away feeling good about myself...lol.

Most of the models I've worked with have told me that they like to put a picture to the photographer's face - after all we get to see the models, sometimes nude so it's only fair. More than a few models also told me they liked the way I looked and that made them feel more comfortable about working with me - and one even got turned on which led to... oh well that's whole other story.
So yeah, photographers should definitely not hide behind shots of models. Come out into the light...
I also use myself as a guinea pig for new lighting/concepts. But over the next few weeks my self portraits will be replaced with better quality model ones. Except my avatar, I like that one.
I do have an implied semi nude self portrait, lol. I thought no one would be able to tell it was me cuz it's shadowy....
When I was a model I liked being able to see the photographers photo before hand. It made me feel more connected to them while planning the shoot.

Yeah, that picture is very tame and anonymous, plus you act more like a male nude model versus some douchey nude pic going 'Heeey, this is me'. Huge difference in professionalism.

If you don't want models to see what you look like, fine.
Jay likes to let models know what he looks like. So what?
Don't take offence, this is just my personal position, there are a few guys here that do it, even the trophy shot with the model, (my good mate Click Hamilton makes it work!) If the model really wants to know, I would consider it by email, I just wouldn't put one on my port!
Luckily, there's FB for those sort of things. Seeing the tog beforehand while communicating via phone and email helps me alot, since I'm an early bird. It let's me know who to look for as they pull up in the parking lot...lol! It also gives me the feeling of meeting an old friend the day of the shoot. If they are nearby and time permits, I would sometimes do a meet and greet before the actual shoot. This way we both can get a sense of who we're working with.
Like a lot of models have already said, it makes no matter to me what they look like.
Maybe I am the only one but I have seen some portfolios on MM where photographers have several photos posted of themselves. Frankly, I think that's kind of weird itself....
Sometimes showing the model a pic of yourself beforehand does come in handy. Like when you are going to meet for a shoot in a public place, just so the model knows who to look for. Otherwise, it's all personal preference.
