Gallagher was a funny motherfucker back in the day, but he was limited. I'd have to go with Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy.... both were fucking genius.

My favourites at the moment at Eddie Izzard, Bill Bailey and Dara O'Briain when it comes to pure stand up. Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle are pretty great too.
It's all subjective though so there is no such thing as a funniest person ever.
Lewis Black
Eddie Izzard
(early) Woody Allen
Richard Pryor
Joan Rivers
George Carlin
Chris Rock
Katt Williams (hardest-working man in comedy)
Robin Williams
Redd Foxx
Ernie Kovacs was the Far Side of his time. He was brilliant.
I would describe Johnny Carson as humorous and amusing rather than gut-wrench funny. He was one of a kind. American TV has tried to replace him and has failed.
Bill Cosby was funny, but not the funniest. However, his dentist routine was a showstopper. People would be trying not to get a hernia from laughing.
We're focused on visual entertainers. How about Mark Twain? Dave Barry? Scott Adams, Bill Waterson, and Gary Larson? The columns of Twain and Barry, along with Dilbert, Calvin & Hobbes, and the Far Side have made me laugh just as much over the course of my life as anything else.

OK, either nobody is around or you all fail.
Mel Blanc was the voice of Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester and Tweety Bird (and Granny), Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, the Tasmanian Devil, that crazy Southern rooster, Yosemite Sam and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters. He often cut those voices live, switching from one to next back and forth in one take.
He was the funniest person EVER.
Admit it, you still love that stuff and your children's children love it.

For written humor, I grew up on good ole Lewis Grizzard in Georgia. I also enjoy Dan Jenkins' sports novels. I recently read Adam Carolla's book and laughed on every page.
