The question comes up now and then, and I've thought of this answer for a while.  The best way I can say it is with pictures:

Sounds about right.

The best way to ruin a photo of a hot girl is to put clothes on her, IMHO.

Well, I would go with beautiful woman, but pretty much.

Kind of a reverse analogy, since you're looking to photograph where the sun doesn't shine...

For most of the models I shoot, the sun shines equally.  Out of over 100 models, I can think of one case where tan lines were relevant.  smile

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, those 2 pictures say it all.  Great analogy

Some seek a bit of mystery ... clothing can make excellent perspectives ...

Each to his or her own I guess.

Well, I shoot clothed models as well, but no one seems to question that.  At least, no one other than models who don't want to pose other than nude.

Why shouldn't you shoot nudes?  I've always loved your work.1

Not to get too far away from the topic, but part of the problem of nude vs. clothed is what what are you taking a picture of?  If you put a beautiful dress on a beautiful woman, 9 times out of 10, the picture is ultimately of the dress, whereas the nude picture is of the woman.  Similarly, if you cloth her in "a bit of mystery" the picture becomes about the mystery.

Personally I like pictures of dresses when they're on a beautiful woman more than when they're on a beautiful clothes rack, and I like mysterious pictures more when they explore the mystery of a beautiful woman than when they explore the mystery of, say, the Almighty, and I like pictures of beautiful nude women . . . well the chain breaks down a bit here, because at the heart of it all, I just plain like beautiful women.

All IMHO, as always.

I always imagined your response to "Why I shoot nudes" would be, because "Art of the Senior Portrait" Photography wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

But couldn't this be used to argue the opposite? The first image is a fine sunset. But that second obstructed image REALLY makes me want to stare and analyze and imagine what's behind there. smile

That's pretty much the rationale of those who say it's "sexier to leave something to the imagination."  Aside from the fact that you always leave SOMETHING to the imagination, that assumes the goal is sexiness.  But it isn't, for me.

May I steal this idea, but instead of an overlay of the bikini, I'd like to put a fence there to block the sun?

Certainly.  And a nice touch.

Edit; and it IS my photo, which I posted specifically with a "creative commons" license.  Not sure if that covers what you propose, but you have my specific permission.

I do it for the beauty and MYSTERY a woman poseses.
Don't have to see it all to be sensuous, in fact, that kind of ruins it for me.
