I upgraded to CS6 with the camera raw 7 module.  I shoot with a Nikon DX format camera, 16 megapixel sensor.  I do not have Lightroom 4. I understand and appreciate all of the organization and retrieval features.  My question is, what exactly can Lightroom 4 do that is different/better than CS6 camera raw 7.

95% of what CS6/CR can do all in one program plus the features you mentioned, cataloging, etc. Also the ability to generate web pages, PDF books, create virtual copies for different file outputs..the list runs on.

By the way, they are complimentary programs.

If you have subscribed to the Adobe Creative Cloud (CS6) then it includes Lightroom 4.  If not you can try Lightroom 4 free for 30 days:

if you have 2,700 images from a wedding shoot lightroom can help get that tamed/organized. but Bridge has some capability as well. i just find it easier to work the RAW controls through lightroom rather than with the ACR pop-up window (as i understand it the raw processing capabilities are the same, just a different interface). actually i prefer aperture but that's a different topic.

if you are getting paid it's all about having an efficient workflow and lightroom can be a useful tool in that regard. if you aren't on the clock then maybe photoshop/bridge is all you need (and there are some other tools people use like photo mechanic). remember that people used to process large shoots before lightroom even existed.

for me with lightroom and aperture i like being able to create albums/collection to help organize my shoots. so i'll make a first pass and then a second pass and then a BTS and then a "for facebook" and "for blog" and so on. it helps keep me organized and i can come back months later and have some hope of understanding what it's all about.

Fortunately, I no longer have to worry about Hugh numbers of photos from a single shoot.  I occasionally volunteer as an event photographer for a handful of local non profits.  Most shoots I do have less than 200 images to sort through.  The photo organizing features are useful, but not worth the cost FOR ME.  Others may find them invaluable.

Looks like I'll just have to get better and faster with CS6 and camera raw.

Thanks for the input.

LR is great for batch work of simple edits, PS is great for single photo hardcore edits.

I recently upgraded from LR 2 to 4.1 and its CRAZY SLOW.
Anyone experience this?
Any threads on this ? Much appreciated.

For the OP, LR is Great when its working smoothly. I LOVE it for editing and basic tweaks.

Might be your hardware.  Depending on your platform (CPU, RAM, HDD, etc.), you may not have enough horsepower for LR 4.1.

I process with a monster of a machine (8 core Xeon w 24GB of RAM) and it's nowhere near as quick as LR3.x.  It certainly works well enough, but not as snappy as it used to be. I have done my own research and found that the culprit seems to be Process Version 2012. It's very clunky and slows the whole edit process down. If I swap back to PV2010, everything becomes instantly responsive like 3.x was.
