I use Bowens Gemini (the cheapest in their range) at the moment and on average I need to replace a modelling light every 2 weeks.  I treat the lights very well and they aren't subject to shock.  I leave the lights on full power pretty much continuously and don't use the "ready" (dimming) light - just the audible beep.  And I never touch the bulb - only handle it with a clean cloth.

Is this normal?  How often do your modelling lights need replacing?

Also, does anybody in the UK know how much a replacement modelling light would be on a Profoto D1 (can't find the item on Calumet's site)?  I'm thinking of upgrading but if this is normal, the cost of replacement modelling lights is going to be the deciding factor.

You have to find the 220V UK version. Don't know what the Bowens runs, but this would be a halogen quartz lamp, which has much longer burn life over tungsten.

I wouldn't really recommend blowing llamaing lights.

Yes, they tend to be smaller and more narrow than other bulbs of similar wattage, but if you're not careful, you can suffer a serious burn on your lips.

I have never had a llamaing light go out in the past 7 years.

i've had trouble with the modeling lights blowing in my JTLs (things like moving the strobe when the lamp is on can do it). haven't had any trouble with my alienbees but they use a more normal bulb, not a halogen.

Probably going to jynx myself by saying this but I've not had to replace a modelling lamp in my Bowens strobes for over a year.

Of course, like any filament bulb, they will die eventually. However, every two weeks sounds very excessive to me.

FYI, these are the lamps I use - not sure if they're compatible with your Geminis though....

I imagine the D1's bulbs to cost a lot.  Like all profoto stuff.  I use my modeling lights sparingly the only lights in the room for setups.
