I've worked with a few people (photographers and artists) who literally had never worked with a model before, so they sent me portfolios full of car pictures and a description of what they wanted to shoot with me. They were offering paid work, and they were sincere in their desire to make some art.

One of them actually wound up sending me some amazing photos after the shoot.

If you feel like taking a risk and scheduling a shoot based on some train photos, go for it. It's your call. I don't think I would shoot trade with someone based on pictures of a train, and I don't really do it anymore, but I have done a few trade shoots before with artists who looked like they had really interesting potential but hadn't reached super high quality yet. You just have to ask yourself, 1) are you in the mood to do a shoot that might or might not get you any good pictures, and 2) based on his messages/personality, is the photographer someone you'd enjoy shooting with anyway?

I think the key difference here is you responded to photographers' requests to work with you. In the case of the OP she was the one who put up the casting.

No, there is nothing unprofessional about asking to see a portfolio relevant to the subject to the shoot you are asking to do.

The guy either mis-understood you or he was simply not a real photographer.

The problem with Craigslist is that this guy:

Is often the one pretending to be a sexy young llama (or photographer) and is just hoping for free porn of local gals.

Personally, I would not send you images of my clients either.  It IS unprofessional to show personal image from past clients, unless those clients specifically permitted it.
I'm guessing that his nude/topless work has been privately commissioned and not intended for public display.

So you think it would be unprofessional to send a prospective client your MM portfolio?

Right... She's not asking for personal images, she's asking for examples of your WORK, if the only imagery you have is from private client shoots, you're the one with the issue, build a public portfolio already.

I agree, Laura UnBound. Even if he shot for private clients, he should have had other shoots where he, as the photographer, has retained rights to the resulting shots and should therefore have at least SOMETHING to use for a port.

No he argued that its unprofessional to ask for pics.
So I went on to the next inquiry.

I dont think shooting a trains is a good example of how one would shoot a model. Its very different.

Man, saying it's unprofessional for you to ask to see his relevant work is a lot like saying it's unprofessional for a corporation to ask for your résumé and references.

Or that's what they'd like you to think.

Anyone soliciting nude work should have examples of such work in the past.
