First. You may only have one chance to get someone's attention.
Second. If you only have one "wow" picture, you'd better find another job.
Any reasonable talent should be able to have 10-20 top notch images. One image is an accident. Producing product on demand is what we are about. Not just one image and - nothing.

Your avatar is what convinces me to look at your portfolio.

Yeah. When I do a search I'll click on most models who come up (at least on the first few pages of results), but not all, and it's the avatar image which is the decider. If an avatar does nothing for me than that will likely end up being the one profile in ten which I skip over.

hey Kelly... you can use that pic with the bed post as avatar.. just use censored bars. lol
I do admit that makes sense. But an avatar does need to be one of your best images, otherwise it doesn't draw anyone to look further.
Well of course but I have a number of images that I consider to be among my best and yet do not make great avatars, based on the response. I have noticed that the colour and contrast of some of my shots result in more friend requests, portfolio comments and lists and various contacts, than some of my other images that are somewhat better technically and artistically.....
i rotate my avatar to give all my models exposure and also because it's boring to always have the same one. i don't strategize to figure out which avatar will give me the most comments.

From a photographer's point of view; when I'm looking for someone to shoot with, their avatar is the only thing that gives me reason to look at their portfolio. I could care less about descriptors or age. I just want to see what you look like and I don't have the time to click through your profile, then click on your portfolio, only to find out you don't fit the look I need.
I'll bypass portfolios where the avatar shows a body part; face and body paint; distant shot with the model only occupying a tiny portion of the frame; the model and someone else in the shot (i.e. boyfriend, another model, etc); an unflattering or ugly photo.
As others have said, your avatar is your first impression. If you want even a moment of my time, then I'd say put up a shot that either shows your face clearly and is shot well, or a fine art image that shows your figure and ability to model.

I just change mine from time to time as I get bored with looking at the old one - I usually use one of my favourites from a recent shooting I liked or something which reflects a current trend or change in direction for me...
Currently I'm on a "girls wearing black in B&W" kick so that's what you see to the left of this message...
