your avatar? If you use your best image as your avatar then there is nothing inside the port that stands out compared to the avatar, right?

Because it's the image that represents you.

I suppose you could chose to represent yourself with less than the best, but that sounds like an odd thing to do.

For me it was a choice between this one...
http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/080708/01/4872f6aa3cd9d_m.jpg or this one... http://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/090115/03/496f1f85bd224_m.jpg

I figured the second one might get more people to click on it, but I could be wrong...

First. You may only have one chance to get someone's attention.

Second. If you only have one "wow" picture, you'd better find another job.

Any reasonable talent should be able to have 10-20 top notch images. One image is an accident. Producing product on demand is what we are about. Not just one image and - nothing.

Your avatar is what convinces me to look at your portfolio.

Yeah. When I do a search I'll click on most models who come up (at least on the first few pages of results), but not all, and it's the avatar image which is the decider. If an avatar does nothing for me than that will likely end up being the one profile in ten which I skip over.

your avatar doesn't need to be your best image, it needs only to attract attention and cause the viewer to look further...

That is true actually. "Best image" and "image that works best in the tiny avatar dimensions" isn't always the same thing.

I would think this would be common sense to most people...

that's bad advice in my opinion -

I think your avatar needs to be a strong image, however the whole purpose of an avatar is to get people to look at your work -

and an avatar is presented in a smaller size

so, for my money, an avatar needs to be colourful but of simple palette, contrasty, and clear when at the thumbnail size for a main page announcement

I do admit that makes sense. But an avatar does need to be one of your best images, otherwise it doesn't draw anyone to look further.

Well of course smile  but I have a number of images that I consider to be among my best and yet do not make great avatars, based on the response.  I have noticed that the colour and contrast of some of my shots result in more friend requests, portfolio comments and lists and various contacts, than some of my other images that are somewhat better technically and artistically.....

i rotate my avatar to give all my models exposure and also because it's boring to always have the same one. i don't strategize to figure out which avatar will give me the most comments.

Every image in your portfolio should be your best. Not just the avi.

Every photo in my portfolio is worthy of being an avi. When I get bored of seeing it I move to the next one smile

I'd click the first one just to see what the hell else could possibly be in your portfolio to cause you to put that one up front.  LOL

Shoot! I used to change out my avatar every week (lol)...now every few weeks or so since I'm shooting a little bit less for my MM portfolio.

And the only reason mine is oblong is because it's faster and easier to find my posts in the forums for any subsequent replies.

From a photographer's point of view; when I'm looking for someone to shoot with, their avatar is the only thing that gives me reason to look at their portfolio.  I could care less about descriptors or age.  I just want to see what you look like and I don't have the time to click through your profile, then click on your portfolio, only to find out you don't fit the look I need.

I'll bypass portfolios where the avatar shows a body part; face and body paint; distant shot with the model only occupying a tiny portion of the frame; the model and someone else in the shot (i.e. boyfriend, another model, etc); an unflattering or ugly photo.

As others have said, your avatar is your first impression.  If you want even a moment of my time, then I'd say put up a shot that either shows your face clearly and is shot well, or a fine art image that shows your figure and ability to model.

I just change mine from time to time as I get bored with looking at the old one - I usually use one of my favourites from a recent shooting I liked or something which reflects a current trend or change in direction for me...

Currently I'm on a "girls wearing black in B&W" kick so that's what you see to the left of this message...
