Oh well, maybe next year!
Have a great time it's really an amazing experience. In some cases it can even be life changing - in a good way.
-----------------------------------------
I have been in communication people who are out there building the city, they say it's been extremely dry and they expect it to be one of the dustiest years they have ever had
One of the things I've always enjoyed about BM is that it's so easy to ride a bike around on the hard playa. That doesn't look to be the case this year!
"Well, as long as no dust gets on my camera, I'll be fine."
FYI, as an experienced burner, I PROMISE you - Dust WILL get on and in your camera. Unless you pack it in multiple layers and don't take a single pic.
Many burner photographers use first generation lenses and back-up cameras only. If you always buy quality then you've got a lot of great gear that is disposable in a worse case scenario. I'm not suggesting that you skimp on quality, but just keep in mind that your camera and lenses will require professional cleaning post burn. Some use scuba-diving housing, etc., and still require professional help afterwards.
I only use high-end 'sealed' gear but try to limit my financial exposure to about 15k worth of losses at BM. Last year was impeccable weather and we still have some lasting effects.
If you're a serious photographer then you already know the risks but if you're a photo noobie and just took out a loan to get the camera of your dreams - be forewarned. Amazing sunny-calm day to Wizard of Oz tornado sh*t-storm in 10 seconds!
The other important thing to mention for newbies is that it's not "dust" and not "sand". It's alkali dust (almost more of a powder) that is corrosive and super fine so it gets EVERYWHERE.
I'll be there with my camera. If anyone is interested in doing a shoot on the playa let me know or come find me at Black Rock Fun Jet Camp at 8:00 and Edelweiss. Ask for Existerntial Phoenix.
