Malibu + Studio + Constant Light = Win
L U C I M A MALIBU & STUDIO FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
It's been 6 months since my last fashion photography workshop!
I've spent so much time shooting with sunlight this summer that I wanted to do a constant light fashion photography workshop. So we're going to put the strobes away and work with ambient light and some hot lights.
And did I mention we're going to Malibu
This is a fully-styled
2-day workshop with MUA/hair
There will be *at least* 4 models per day
. You will be shooting a LOT. You will probably run out of memory cards before the end of each day.
This is probably my last workshop of the year.
- Basic principles
of managing constant light. When to use reflectors? When/why/why not use strobes? What are the challenges?
- Shoot 4 different lighting setups
, each presenting a unique lighting challenge. Learn how to manage shadows/highlights.
- Model interaction/direction
. I will be demonstrating how I work with models to achieve the looks in the images below.
. From importing to image review, Camera Raw adjustments and then retouching for sunlight, ambient light, and tungsten. I'll being showing you to get the film look that I employ in my images.
- Shooting in Malibu
- I'll be demonstrating how I pick my shooting spots
. What makes a good shooting spot? What makes a good background? And why?
- I'll show you how I manage available light
. How to shoot with it? How to shoot against it? How do you expose correctly?
By the end of the workshop you should be extremely comfortable executing a constant light shoot that yields images like the ones below.

-Who is L U C I M A
? I'm a fashion-editorial photographer based in Los Angeles (see www.lucima.com
). I also teach at the New York Film Academy (Universal Studios campus) to 1-year and 2-year MFA photography students.
-Since good models
are paramount to getting "the shot" we'll provide experienced agency-represented models for the workshop. I'll be updating this page shortly with who we're shooting.
-Keeping the workshop small for more one-on-one attention
. I will cap the attendance at 15.
Photographers should bring
-Computer to follow along for post work
-Media cards. LOTS of them. And fast ones. Preferably 60mb/sec+.
-Something to take notes with
Will update more as inquiries come in!
: Where can I see more of the previous workshop results?[/b]
: Please see our L U C I M A Workshop Facebook Group!
: Which airport should I fly into?
: The best airport would be Burbank (Bob Hope Airport) but there is a limited # of flights in and out of Burbank. Next probably LAX or Ontario. Ontario Int'l Airport is 29 miles and smaller so it's easier to get in and out of. Then you have LAX (a huge hub) is 37 miles away.
: I'll be flying in from [fill in the blank]. Where should I stay that's not too far from your studio?
: There are several 2-3 miles away from the studio. I'm not affiliated with any of the following suggestions:
924 West Huntington Drive, Monrovia, CA
Oak Tree Inn
788 West Huntington Drive, Monrovia, CA
700 W. Huntington Drive, Monrovia, CA
Hampton Inn Arcadia/Monrovia
311 East Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA 91006
211 East Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA
Hilton Garden Inn Arcadia/Pasadena Area
199 North 2nd Avenue, Arcadia, CA
: Which models are we shooting?
: Will update shortly! But chances are that they'll be the ones that you see most recently in my portfolio. See my tumblr blog for recent work!
: Will we be shooting nudes?
: Nope. For that I suggest you go to Drew and Karl's workshops. I hear they're great
: At what point will you know whether you will register enough students to confirm the workshop?
: I never cancel my workshops. If there is even 1 photographer, the show goes on! Yes, I will teach to 1 photographer if only 1 registers!
: Do I really need a light meter?
: Yes and no. But basically I'll be showing you how to light with AND without light meters. But for a long-winded version of this answer please see my official stance on light meters.
: Are we shooting on location?
: We're going to shoot in Malibu on the second day. Exact location will be emailed prior to the workshop
: What's the best airport to fly into for your workshop?
: The best airport would be Burbank but there are limited flights in and out of Burbank. Next probably LAX or Ontario. Ontario Int'l Airport is 29 miles (and smaller) and LAX (a huge hub) is 37 miles away.
