Hi all -

I was talking to a model last week that inquired about trading a number of modeling shoots in exchange for a custom web site to be designed by my company.

We got most of the initial arrangements agreed upon and I went ahead and registered a domain name she requested and set up a "cover" (home) page to activate it. I had planned on setting it up as a stand alone web account with the server provider I contract with for her to do with as she wished once our shoots were completed as agreed upon.

Then nothing from her for nearly a week. Today, I receive an email stating she is no longer interested because she was told that these sorts of things are often scams: "I have been told this is a common scam on models.. I just dont trust someone else running my site with my photos....Thank you for the offer tho."

So I guess I have a very NON-criminal mind because I have no idea what sorts of scam(s) can be perpetrated on a model in this area.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks.

That is odd!  You were not collecting any money from her, and you had an agreement with her for "Trade!"  This was not for a "paysite" where members would be puchasing subscriptions, was it?  If money were flowing in from some place, then perhaps maybe?  Model paysites are difficult to make money with though.  Otherwise, I really don't see where a "scam" could come into play if this was a mutual trade of modeling for shoots in exchange for a website.  Seems like a decent trade to me.

Everything sounds on the up and up to me based on your info. Perhaps you should clarify the consequences of the agreement explicitly to the model?

Sounds like she's either afraid of
- losing money somewhere along the line
-lose control over her website somehow
(or she thinks she's being lowballed and thinks there's a revenue in it for you).

Nope.

Just a simple 8+ page web site. Would have looked great too.

It was a straight trade for 5 shoots. And I'd turn it over to her totally once the shoots were completed.

I'm in Portland and she's in Oakland so I would have been my going there to the Bay Area for location shoots. No problem with escorts, etc.

If she's on MM, that'd be considered outing.
I'd remove the link .. quickly. No good can come of it.

It could be a trust issue.  Some models have lost their website to the control of a photographer or webmaster, so it certainly could happen.

It's possible that she simply does not want to do the work necessary to help build and maintain a website.  It's not easy to put together a website for a model without lots of images, and some input from that model.

She's no longer interested. End of story. This is why people do the vanishing act instead of being upfront and saying "no longer interested", the only difference here is being instead of hassling her personally to find out exactly what she's thinking you've posted on the forum.
Could be a polite lie to save you getting hurt feelings for all you know. Stop stressing over it, and find someone else who's interested.

Kindly remove the link in your post by editing it.  She changed her mind about working with you.  None of us can read her mind, and there is not much you can do but call this a lesson learned.  Too bad that you bought the domain, but perhaps you can offer to transfer it into her name at no added cost?

Not really stressed at all. Feel a little bad for her. But I also wasn't aware that there's an issue with web sites being used in scams against Models.

Was curious exactly what scams I should be on guard for when I discuss this with any future models if it comes up.

That's all.

Her boyfriend/manager/sluggo has a copy of Frontpage and reckons he can do a better job.

smile Maybe so.

Just sort of caught be by surprise. Not every day I have a web site on trade turned down. Not that I do a lot of them.

Thanks all for your input. It's appreciated.

Cheers!

As long as you have her first choice domain name, her boyfriend can't use it.

Exactly. My first thought was that she poorly communicated she was having a custom website designed and a boyfriend/family member started scaring her with stories of scammers being able to access her site for whatever purpose.

If she stepped back and used her head she wouldn't have been scared off. But when you have someone chirping in your ear, "ooooo! don't let anybody touch your website..." the fear took over.
