Web Site Scams & Models
Hi all - I was talking to a model last week that inquired about trading a number of modeling shoots in exchange for a custom web site to be designed by my company. We got most of the initial arrangements agreed upon and I went ahead and registered a domain name she requested and set up a "cover" (home) page to activate it. I had planned on setting it up as a stand alone web account with the server provider I contract with for her to do with as she wished once our shoots were completed as agreed upon. Then nothing from her for nearly a week. Today, I receive an email stating she is no longer interested because she was told that these sorts of things are often scams: "I have been told this is a common scam on models.. I just dont trust someone else running my site with my photos....Thank you for the offer tho." So I guess I have a very NON-criminal mind because I have no idea what sorts of scam(s) can be perpetrated on a model in this area. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks. Model paysites are difficult to make money with though. Otherwise, I really don't see where a "scam" could come into play if this was a mutual trade of modeling for shoots in exchange for a website. Perhaps you should clarify the consequences of the agreement explicitly to the model? Sounds like she's either afraid of - losing money somewhere along the line -lose control over her website somehow (or she thinks she's being lowballed and thinks there's a revenue in it for you). Oct 08 12 02:27 pm Link Nope. Just a simple 8+ page web site. Would have looked great too. It was a straight trade for 5 shoots. And I'd turn it over to her totally once the shoots were completed. I'm in Portland and she's in Oakland so I would have been my going there to the Bay Area for location shoots. This is why people do the vanishing act instead of being upfront and saying "no longer interested", the only difference here is being instead of hassling her personally to find out exactly what she's thinking you've posted on the forum. Could be a polite lie to save you getting hurt feelings for all you know. Stop stressing over it, and find someone else who's interested. None of us can read her mind, and there is not much you can do but call this a lesson learned. Too bad that you bought the domain, but perhaps you can offer to transfer it into her name at no added cost? Oct 08 12 03:14 pm Link Not really stressed at all. Feel a little bad for her. But I also wasn't aware that there's an issue with web sites being used in scams against Models. Was curious exactly what scams I should be on guard for when I discuss this with any future models if it comes up. That's all. My first thought was that she poorly communicated she was having a custom website designed and a boyfriend/family member started scaring her with stories of scammers being able to access her site for whatever purpose.
