This is from Geek Universe "Would You Survive A Zombie Attack".

Weren't we supposed to own copyright of the images we made banners with?

No, you're right; I didn't...and for that I feel ashamed.

I will give back my prize money and ask that all the celebrity endorsements I received for this be stripped from me.  I'll also return the Nobel Peace Prize and the Pulitzer this image received and give myself a self-imposed ban from participating in the next Thanksgiving day banner contest.  I thought I could get away with it, but you were just too sharp to see through my deceit, no matter how well I tried to alter it from the real deal.

This prize doesn't belong to me...it belongs to all those who weren't chosen for this year's banner contest.  I only hope I can live with the guilt.

Now I know how Lance Armstrong feels.

Right.  Well, you violated someone elses copyright and you're a photographer.  That's pretty low.  sad

Sweet Jesus, it's just a frickin' banner.  How's it any different than the billions of meme's floating around out there?  Was there any financial gain or mal-intent either before or after it was submitted?  Will AMC or any other part of the production company suffer ANY damages AT ALL from it?  Did I credit myself as the photographer?

I suppose all the images of "scary cat" should be taken down as well, since I doubt anyone who posted his image shot that photo either.

Seriously, there's more important things out there in the real world than a silly banner that's going to be shown for a few days.  To get all bunched up about this is just laughable.

If the mods want to take the stuff I submitted off the banner, TRUST ME I won't lose any sleep over it or be filing any lawsuits.  If that would make the people whining about it feel better, then by all means please do remove them so they can find other petty stuff to get their panties in a bunch over.

Hell, if you want; I can create a "participation trophy" badge/image to send out to everyone who lost, so they can stick on their profile page and make them still "feel" like a winner.  borat

If its not a big deal, why did you waste your time to enter?  You certainly have enough time to come on here and make long winded "witty" retorts.  Why don't you take that time to catch up on some manners and humility.  While you're at it, make your self a "winners"badge too and stick it...

You won't.

I wonder if AMC will.

You just put Censoring Assholes into a pickle, since the image is being used to promote Model Mayhem.

Not cool.

And that's the problem with copyright infringement. It's not actually illegal because you didn't think it was a big deal to use someone else's photo for "just a ______."

PS. I love your port, I think I'm going to make some posters and sell them. Don't worry, it's just a poster.

Well one of the other entries...had Darth Vader...Did Lucasfilms allow this cat to use Darth Vader's image? We all know that George Lucas is stingy with his Copyrighted Material...  I also noticed Predator image..which is owned by..20th Century Fox, Joel Silver, Lawerence Gordon and Davis Entertainment.

As a Model Mayhem official, should you really be congratulating contestants for so blithely and defiantly stealing copyrighted material?

The fact that you're acting like an ass over blatant theft is really pitiful.

It's not butthurt over not winning... it's the fact that you're so crass about violating copyright. Where do you draw the line? Stealing is okay with you, so long as you feel the purpose of said stealing is to promote being "silly"?

What's harder for you to admit? That you lacked the content to create something original? Or that you got caught?

Eros Fine Art Photo wrote:

And this is just about the most pathetic thing I've read on Model Mayhem in a long time. Nice try.

Your reaction to this reminds me of the kids who would get caught cheating in college. The rationale is the same. Hell, even some of the same arguments were raised. What you fail to understand is that cheating on a silly little banner contest, in my mind (and perhaps in the minds of others), casts a shadow over the entire body of your work.

Wow. In for a penny, in for a pound, eh? It's not enough that you got caught using someone else's copyrighted material, but you have to be a complete ass and joke about the copyright violation, too?

Self-imposed ban from the Thanksgiving banner contest? If the mods have any backbone they'll chop your account. In an ideal world, IB and MM would protect themselves legally and enforce copyright law to the hilt. Let's see if they do.

Wait...aren't you now infringing on copyrights then, since you just posted a gif with clips from TV shows which have well known celebrities in them?  The gif also has a website on the bottom.  Are you now promoting that website?

I'm genuinely asking, since the work on that gif belongs to other entities and I don't believe you shot any of the frames.

Or is an animated gif excluded from all that?  Are memes excluded as well?  What if you copy an image from another website and post it in a thread here?  Is that not stealing the copyrighted image?

There's the letter of the law and then there's the spirit of the law.  I meant no harm in posting the banners I did.  It wasn't for my financial gain and it wasn't something I was taking credit for.  It was for a simple, fun thing MM does every year.  I never thought they would be picked, simply because they weren't anything special and took no effort at all to make; as opposed to some of the very talented work by others here, including someone who apparently isn't too fond of me now.

Could I have created a banner using images I shot myself?  Sure; I'd say I'm fairly comfortable with all the buttons and stuff on my camera and every once in a while create a semi-decent picture.  If I do create one though, will it win next year?  Will I even care?

Like I said, I meant no harm and I certainly didn't receive (nor is it likely I ever would have) received any financial gain from this. Someone is now suggesting I be removed from this site because of this transgression.  In all honesty I have to ask...does that punishment fit the crime?

I was going to create a banner using a picture of Jimmy Savile (injoke for the UK members), but I didn't because I didn't have a picture of him I could use, and I didn't want to infringe anyone's copyright.  I like a level playing field, so I'm a bit disappointed that some other members didn't think the same way.

It's too late for this year, now, but next year, something in the rules about copyright, please?

And also, next time remember the worksafe rules should still apply.

For a very experienced photographer, you're terribly clueless about copyright and fair use.

I'm not posting anymore on this.  Just pisses me off and obviously pointless.

No, it's not too late for this year. The rule was there.

http://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=794149

7) Don't use other people's work without permission.   By submitting, you state that you permit MM to publish the banner in MM's header between October 28, 2011 and November 5, 2011, and that you have the necessary permission to grant that license.

Well, yes, but...

Being picky, and knowing how MM people are sometimes not very bright, using the word "copyright" might make that rule clearer.

I was thinking of the squabbling that was going on when I said it was too late for this year.

And silence about the worksafe comment?   One image in particular is quite graphic, and some people could consider it to be offensive.

Agreed.

If this was a Designers Mayhem, I guess within fair use, it would be ok to use someone elses photo.

But this is a Photography Mayhem, I can see no point on using someone elses photo. Indeed it might be considered fair use if you had pointed out the owner or admitted that it was indeed wrong what you did, Eros.

Playing the victim really does not help your argumentation, Eros. You are a good photographer but a lousy PR and that is why there are agents and producers to avoid professionals to put their foot in their mouth. But then again, being a hobby photographer might explain partially why you have no clue yet.

There is little that hurts photographers more, then having his copyright infringed. I guess you don't mind people using your photos freely and its a matter of a paradigm. I guess people can use your photos for banners on adult websites, since you do not mind at all.

If someday you would spend thousands of dollars on a shoot and give or sell the work for little profit, you may learn to respect copyrights as a principle. Remember to keep your dayjob untill you do.

At least we have all learn something with this debate. I hope Eros did and replaces pride with some modesty.
