I have a brand new Canon 100mm Macro USM lens (non-L version) that is BRAND NEW WITH $50 Canon LENS HOOD BUT WITHOUT BOX.  Image quality is the same as the L version, it just doesn't have IS and weather proofing.  You can remedy that by shooting with a tripod and not shooting in inclement weather.  Save yourself $400-$500.
