Couple of very important points.
1.) Don't do social, be social. Who you are communicates far more elegantly than what you do. So invest in becoming a better more attractive person instead of becoming the same person with better communication skills. I hope you can understand the difference.
2.) If you don't implement what you read and hear, it does not count. It's useless. After you have an insightful Aha! moment, before its replaced by the next one you have to act upon it or it will do you know good. Understanding something intellectually is only the first step, but if you don't go out and do it and test it, you might as well not read anything at all. Simple as that.
First step is, aha now I get it > second step is testing it, acting upon it > and than you reach transformation, you start seeing things differently and you start thinking differently. You value things you did not before and you see opportunities where there were non before. And you need that mind set to be able to keep up with the ever more competitive world.

BTW. using MM for networking is a bit late in the game. No too late, but it's not what it used to be and it's unfortunately slowly but surely dying off. To compensate for that loss you need to leverage social media, because it's word of mouth on steroids. And social media, whether it's Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Pinterest, LinkedIn or YouTube is about farming not hunting. It's about cultivating relationships that matter, not looking for the next person to shoot and frame and put on your living room wall as a trophy. It's not about likes or followers, it's about marriage not one night stand. Simply put; focus on how to be social, not on how to do social. Oh and email is still strong and healthy.
