This may not be a surprising but it is an intreresting finding. The last time a lower than average temperature month was recorded was in February 1985 - before many of our members here were born. If this trend keeps up, I guess we'll keep seeing massive hurricanes each year like clockwork and more extreme weather.
It's amusing that we have the knowledge to solve this issue, but rather than devote resources to solve these issues, apparently big business finds it much more profitable to fight against it.
Global warming can not be disputed. The CAUSES of the global warming will be argued to death. Literally. Maybe it's the 7 billion people on the planet all moving around too much causing too much heat. Maybe it's a volcano redistributing too much hot insides to the earth's outside. Maybe it's ozone depletion. Maybe it's cars that only get 16 miles to the gallon.

Oh really?
And what IS the solution? Do tell.

But you believe we can affect this trend?
Anthropogenic climate change is a scientific fact that 98 % of climate scientists agree on, while the 2 % that don't have sub-par qualifications and are most often in the pocket of those that are lobbying against it (like big oil companies).
The dispute in the scientific community is not about whether ACC exists or not, but about how large the human footprint really is and what this means for the future.
People also often forget that global warming is just one result of the human footprint among many. So even if you for whatever reason refute to believe that ACC exists, many other damaging effects of human civilization upon nature still do - like air, water and soil pollution, dwindling supplies of fresh water and many fish populations at the brink of collapse (fish is the primary source of nutrition for billions of humans) to name just a few.
But it's a safe bet that the newest climate conference in Doha will result in yet another bag of hot air, courtesy of our wise leaders that don't care about future generations.

The planet warms and cools naturally, however - that natural cycle can be, and is effected. Just like how every one in this forum will die - but if we eat poorly, do not exercise, and make bad decisions, the quality of life will be much different from someone that eats healthy, exercises regularly, and makes good decisions.
Humans know that pollution upsets the balance of ecosystems, and in many cases destroys them. It is odd that some believe our atmosphere is exempt from this reality...
I'm still trying to figure out what the big deal is. So what!
No one knows that the average temperature is. We only know for as long as we have information. We have warm up and ice ages and for all we know, we are still coming out of the last ice age. When the dinosaurs wondered around the earth, it was much warmer than it is now, so either changes are natural or the dinosaurs drove a lot of cars we don't know about.
And if is getting warmer, so what. Nature changes. All scientist believe in evolution but think it will fall down with gradual warming. It won't. Scientists believe in change but somehow think the earth is static. It isn't. Things will change. Plants and animals will die off, only to be replaced by new plants and animals. If you think that's a bad idea, then you think that dinosaurs should still be around and those furry little mammals with their high-tech, warm blood are a bad idea.
Change happens. It is not good or bad, it is just change.

Thank you!!
No one is arguing that things are getting warmer but so what...just deal with it andf life will go on, trust me. My parents, grandparents, great grand parents and on down the line didn't give two shits about the planet, they made life as easy and enjoyable as possible for themselves and let future generations deal with whatever the future had in store for them.
No need to panic, the planet will correct itself if it needs to and people will adapt as they have for thousands of years and spending billions to "fix" it is a waste of money.

Oh gee look... Instinct disagrees! Should we actually get a few posts of back and forths in - or should I tell you I really don't care what you think now?

Oh no need, I already know you don't care if you're wrong. It's obvious in your posts.

Add me to this! All of this bickering is ridiculous. It's a GLOBAL issue, not just the U.S.

CIP I swear..why the hell do you reply if you 'don't care what he thinks?'
Clearly, you do. You took the time out to hit the reply button.

CIP has a problem with people he can't bully. In this case he obviously isn't aware of the science that shows that warming will result in fewer hurricanes and that we are currently in an historic lull for hurricanes impacting the US. Not exactly what people expected with all of the hysteria over warming.

It's nice of you to come to Instinct's rescue. Glad to see such a strong bond of comradery develop here among members.

It's like they ignore the facts we've had worse storms in the days with little to no cars. Hell cows put out more bad stuff than the cars do. Just last week Sublime posted how cleaner things are here in our country at least.

Nope, no science here... Just an old man in San Diego that cannot take a little heat...

It's like the ex that constantly calls and texts to remind you that they've moved on and don't care anymore.

Fewer but larger, according to a NOAA official I saw speaking on a show about Sandy recently.

Yes that was my point and exactly where CIP was wrong in his OP - but he's already told us several times he doesn't care.
From NOAA today:
" this is the seventh consecutive year that no major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5) have hit the United States. The only major hurricane this season was Hurricane Michael, a Category 3 storm that stayed over the open Atlantic."
That's a record and highly unusual for the US to go so long without a major hurricane striking. Also unusual for a La Nina year to be so quiet with no storms over Cat 3 and only that one Cat 3 storm.
Art of CIP wrote: Trust me on this one - you are so wasting your time with Instinct on this...
Unlike you, Vivus tries to stay current on the latest science and is correct that a warmer world is expected to result in fewer hurricanes. Amazingly that just what we have experienced over the last few years!
NOAA also reminds us that hurricane activity is cyclical and at least partly based on the phase of the AMO:
"Hurricane forecasters remind us that a well-established climate pattern puts us in an ongoing era of high activity for Atlantic hurricanes that began in 1995. Since that time, more than 70 percent of seasons have been above normal, including 2012. Historically, Atlantic high-activity eras have lasted 25-40 years, with the previous one occurring from the mid-1930s until 1970."

You should make your mind up about the quotes you use...
first you quote this

In the OP, CIP predicted (actually, guessed) that we'll see a "massive" hurricane each year. Massive means large, not necessarily with high winds. That seems a safe prediction, and within the expectations of current science.

Wow your reading comprehension must not be very good. Are you really accusing NOAA of being inconsistent?
Or maybe you just don't understand the difference between an "active period" (which we're in now) and a "record long period without a major hurricane making landfall in the US". ACE - a measure of overall storm energy - is also way down.

Really? Can you find science to back that up? He also said "hurricanes", plural not singular. What I've read said fewer storms but stronger. I've never read anything that indicated storms would be larger.
