So my Nikon D300 mirror gets stuck in up position every few frames. Was wondering how much that usually costs to repair? I have around 135K shutter actuations, should i get the shutter replaced too?

I tested it with different lenses and it occurs more frequently with my 50mm 1.8 D, the screw drive one.
There no consistent pattern to when it gets stuck and the camera doesn't show error code when it does. I've checked every setting I could and even reset the camera, so i'm sure its a malfunction.

Through Nikon, I'd guess about $300, but they would repair other things too.  (That was about what the flat-rate NPS repair on my D2x was a few years ago, IIRC)

I don't know if private shops can do the repair anymore, since Nikon apparently stopped making repair parts available.

Looks like the mirror box assembly needs to be replaced. Ask for a quote.

This is a tricky question. I just checked KEH, they have a LN- D300 listed for $645.

The MTBF for the D300 shutter is listed at 150K, so, yes, if I was to send my camera to Nikon, I would probably want to have a new shutter installed. I dont know how much that would be, and I dont know how many other problems they would solve for the price.

I love my D300, and it is very lightly used. I hope it lives forever smile

I would love to hear the results when you work this out......

get a qualified repair facility to give an estimate, I would 1st try a professional deep cleaning, I had similar happen to my D70 and just got it cleaned out and it worked fine, lot less expensive than replacing parts, I think it may be cheaper to shop for used one replacement camera on eBay or similar camera sites if it was the mirror issue....jmho, good luck.

My D300 was purchased in September, 2008 and has 106,465 actuations.

At my currect shooting rate, it would reach 150,000 in 2 years.

I never shoot in burst modes or particularly fast otherwise, and most speeds are 1/500 or less. Will that help as far as longevity?

If you don't want to go with official Nikon servicing, these folks are highly recommended:

Brought it over to nikon repair in Melville today, $224 replace the rubber grips the glue came off, replace mirror and shutter. Also brought in 70-200mm vrI sticky-ness in zoom ring and rubber coming off, still under extended warranty.

I just picked up the camera from repair. got home, they did a nice job cleaning and replacing the grips, even painted the buttons that had rubbed off.
Too bad the camera doesn't actually work now. It doesn't write to the card, it doesn't turn off. When you press the shutter you can't access the rear LCD anymore.

Pain in the ass that i have to go out there again. Should've tested it there but wanted to beat the rushhour traffic

Check the serial number if it is really your camera.

Looks like in the course of repairing and replacing the faulty module, they have disturbed the other circuits in the process. The symptoms displayed seem to be a circuit problem, not a hardware one. You should be able to wait for the repairs while they diagnose it back in the shop. It just might be a loose connection. (hopefully).
Nothing else much to do but send it back.
Best of luck!

For those having this issue with their D300 and want to try the temporary solution above, I believe he is referring to the 'depth of field preview button'.
