As somebody who mainly shoots outdoors (for money reasons and because it's more fun for me), the winter is often a rather fallow time for me, other than the occasional landscape/cityscape stuff that doesn't involve convincing people to stand around in the cold for my camera. However, I'd love to do more shooting in the winter with models. Does anybody have hints on free/cheap places to shoot (either in general or in Boston) when its cold out?

Your port is roughly half indoors from the look of it...so those locations should be open to you.  Outdoors, the Common is beautiful in Winter!  Nearby places like the Park Plaza, Beacon Hill, etc. all offer great backdrops.

The indoor shots are all from my camera club's model nights and other such events. As for outdoor places to shoot, I've found that no matter how lovely the locations available, convincing models to come out into the cold for an outdoor photoshoot in winter is tough, especially since I'm just a hobbyist who can only afford to do trade shoots. I do try to go out and do some landscape and cityscape shooting in the winter, though.

"Where" might be less important than "What" do you want to shoot. What's wrong with shooting winter fashion? or shooting in a way appropriate to the environment?

Maybe integrating the model into the environment would work?

What about documenting how people react to the cold? or combat the cold?

There are a gazillion places to shoot that aren't outdoors in someplace like Boston.

1.  Universities during winter break.  For many, campus is deserted.

2.  B&B's during their non-busy times.  Offer to shoot promo shots for them if they'll let you shoot in their interiors.

3.  Eateries and bars in off-hours.  Did some nice glamour shots in a wine bar.  They were excited to let me do so and all I had to do was give them 4 edits with permission to use them on their website or flyers.

4.  Unrented commercial or retail space.  Call the leasing agent.  9 out of 10 will say no.  The 10th will ask if you have insurance and then demand that you sign a liability statement and give you the okay.

5.  Artist studios.

6.  Talk to real estate agents.  Offer some shots of the property if you get a few hours in the house to shoot.

In addition to what's already been said, if you can find a studio that just has one decent flat rate (not the overly expensive hourly ones you sometimes see) you could always book a few models and do a few shoots in one day.

A lot of good suggestions already. I have just one more to offer. Invest in an oldschool full length down car coat. You will probably find these in strange places for little coin.
Mention that you have this for the model to keep warm between poses. It seems to put the acceptance rate a lot higher smile

While the concept of a coat is not unique to Boston, it will permit you to get out of the downtown core into the 'winter wonderland' parts of the N-suburbs, once there is snow.
