Does it matter? The holiday has different meanings for everyone (and that meaning tends to evolve over time.) Attempting to categorize only serves to further alienate.

The birth of Jesus is our main focus at Christmas. My husband and I have agreed to not teach our children about Santa.

No we will exchange gifts but I want my children to focus more on giving than receiving. We will do things at Christmas time to give back to our community in the form of mission work. We will also read the Christmas story from the Bible to them on Christmas Eve. The gifts in our home will represent those brought to the young Jesus by the wise men.

What are you going to tell your kids when they ask who the fat dude with a white beard in the red suit is?

And I'm not sure the kids will appreciate myrrh...

We will tell them of the tradition of Santa of course and that they need to respect other kids and their traditions. So it's not nice to go around yelling "Santa isn't real". But my kids will not ever grow up thinking Santa is real or that he brings them presents. They will know him as tradition and culture only.

Ummm no my children will have normal gifts like any other child in this century. But they will learn of the gifts the wise men brought and why. Gifts in our house will be a representation of the Christmas story.

But the gifts the wise men gave were direct preparation for the crucifixion. How can you square that with a new bike and a My Little Pony?

just curious if you have kids, or youre just talking about in the future? cause it may change your mind when you actually have kids enjoying santa claus.

i don't care about your religious beliefs but for the sake of educating kids i hope you give them reality:

Santa Claus is based on a real person:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas

Christmas is based on celebrating winter solstice:
Thousands of years ago people celebrated winter solstice at the end of December, and then some Christian religious stuff happened. But people still liked partying at the end of December so they decided they would just pretend it was Jesus' birthday instead. Cycle of the sun turned into cycle of the son.

I love the coca cola santa commercial from an esthetic point of view. But christmas is about the birth of jesus for me smile. Other than seeing that commercial on tv occasionally, Santa is in no way part of my christmas celebration.

Besides, we already have Sinterklaas on december 6th which is celebrated everywhere here, Santa is not part of our culture and tradition, and I'm REALLY not liking how people are adopting the Santa thing here.

Ummm not they weren't they were to help Mary and Joseph escape. The gifts brought were very expensive back then and worth a lot of money they literally were brought for Mary and Joseph to sell so they could escape Herod. Jesus was already about 2 years old when this happened.

Only choices between the two advertising images dreamed up to re-purpose the holiday?

I'm a traditionalist, I'll go for a celebration of the passing of the solstice and return of the light.
