If you had the choice between a Nikon D600 or the Nikon D800 without cost being a factor, which would you choose? If you could follow up with why you'd choose a llama that would be wonderful!
Thanks Guys.... begin!
Well I purchased the d800 (haven't received it yet) then I got this birdie in my ear telling me the D600 is actually a better camera over the D800. I also read Ken Rockwells review on the comparison of both and he sides with the d600 as well. Citing "36 MP is worse than 24 MP. No pro I know shoots above 10 MP" and "the biggest reason I prefer the D600 over my D800E is that it's easy to reconfigure the D600 to what I'm trying to do with its U1 and U2 modes, while my D800 takes too long to reconfigure between shots". link http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d600/vs-d800.htm So I am torn and looking for advice. If anyone has these cameras and can provide input that would be helpful.
Thanks guys!

I own a D800...no issues and I am happy with it.
Oh no...your one of those...people..who quotes ken flopwell. lol
Ken Flopwell is the only Camera Reviewer who can review a camera without using that camera. lol

I just went through this choice myself recently. I chose the D800E. I decided which one I wanted before I went in the store but I still held both cameras in my hands for half an hour before I could put my money on the counter. If money is no object the 800 is best in several areas. For me it came to the 200,000 count shutter & full magnesium sealed body. The full 36MPs will probably not be used by the majority of photographers but crop an recompose latitude is a plus.
The big question to ask yourself is, why are you upgrading and when will you be able to upgrade next? If you upgrade frequently why spend spend an extra $1000 extra for a 10% gain. If you do casual photography or weekend studio work do you need the extra megapixels or survivability? The D600 has the strong sealed body with the 24MP version of the D800 sensor. It also has dual SD slots if you are moving up from a camera that uses SD cards. With the money you save you can get a pretty nice lens to go with it for the price of the D800.

You really can't go wrong either way.
I'm upgrading from the D7000, I do not upgrade often. This will actually be a gift for me (payment owed) so the price is not a issue. You guys have me leaning back at the d800 and I'm feeling centered again so I think I made the right choice in the first place.... damn subconscious making me rethink everything I purchase.
Did not know this! great to learn...
So I should stick with the D800? no D600 users wanna chime in.....?
I know several people with D800s and one person with a D600. I wanted to get some time in with both cameras before making a decision and for me it was the D800. It wasn't even a difficult decision. Sealed body, extra MP, yadda yadda yadda, the list goes on.
Oh, and one of my other reasons for buying a D800 over the 600 was because Ken Dipshit said that I should do the opposite.
I can tell you I have no regrets so far. I moved from a D700 and am impressed by the D800E's movie mode and picture quality. My path was Olympus E300 & E1, Nikon D80, D200 & D7000, D700, & finally D800E. It's been a real and substancial progression that has been an excellent learning experience.
Personally I'm struggling on whether to get the D800 or the new Nikon 1 V2.
Seriously though - For me the past 10 years has been about wishing I could get back to the capability I had with Kodachrome on Nikon. The D800 essentially gets me there, so for me there's virtually no decision process.

It is sad to say but clients really do expect new technology and some read the trades. All expect the "best possible quality". Its like applying for a job and having the required college degree. Do you need it for even 1% of the work you will be doing, No. Will they accept a basket weaving degree, Yes....

Since I can read what you wrote...This is all a mute point..because you have already made up your mind and purchased a D800.

Happy D600 owner here... I don't need those huge 36 megapixel memory card choaking files... 24 megapixel is more than enough for me. The U1 and U2 modes ROCK... something the D800 doesn't have. It's a lighter camera that actually scored slightly higher in 'high ISO performance' than the D800... second only to the mighty D3s (at $5000)... the undisputed king of high ISO performance. At $1000 less than the D800, I think the D600 is Nikon's current 'best bang for the buck' full frame DSLR...

If you were shooting sports or action then D600, but other than that I would go towards the D800 for commercial work, and most editorial. If I was making the choice based off the gear I own it would be the D800, because I have D3 cameras for sports and action.

The D800 can shoot in 36, 20, and 9 Megapixels. So if you don't want 36 megapixels "choaking [sic] files" then you can set your size down, which is what I do when shooting events where having a high image size is not justified due to workflow.
Personally though, I'd much rather have high megapixels at my disposal and not need them than not having them and wishing that I did.
If cost wasnt' a factor? The D800E; for the sharpness purposes. I currently have a D800, though, and absolutely love it. The majority of my portfolio was taken with it.
Just be aware- that those lenses that were "ok" on your old camera? Yeah, well, if they have flaws they're going to show it bigtime on the D800(e)! I wouldn't have it any other way, though. And now that i've upgraded my lenses to go with it, its amazing.
Yes, the file sizes are huge. However, it's nice to have the ability and flexibility to crop as I need, and not have to loose a lot in size.

The D600 is no match for it's bigger brother;
No NPS support as consumer grade
Not fully weather sealed as consumer grade
Mostly plastic body as consumer grade
Lower flash sync speed as consumer grade
1/4000th shutter as consumer grade
Shutter life much less than D800 as consumer grade

Lastly, the ergonomics and general feel of this camera is like the most amazing sex ever; I have honestly never felt anything so good in my hands, well almost never!
Mostly the build quality. My father thats not a photographer was with me in the store looking at a D600 and he even commented it seemed kinda cheap.
If you shoot in DX mode the files are 15mp, so its still an upgrade over my D300 and D3. The D600 DX mode is 10mp. And if you add a battery grip the D800 framerate is 6fps in DX mode, faster than D600.
The D800 also has 4 custom shooting banks you can save. If you put it in the customized My Menu you can access it about as fast as turning the mode dial
I have owned the d800 for at least 4 months and only put like 300 shots on it till the other night. Its because so many idiots on this forum and Ken Rockwell that talk about it and have no ideal or even own this camera, and they speak like they are the expert. The same thing happened to me on the d3x.
I can not imagine the d600 feeling as confident as the d800 or focusing as well. from my past experience Nikon is not known for making sturdy consumer type cameras
I'd get the D600 myself, because the sort of shooting I do would benefit from the higher FPS and smaller file sizes (save money on memory cards and hard drive space), but I suppose if cost wasn't a factor I'd be able to afford the extra associated accessories and get the D800 anyway. Although if cost wasn't a factor at all I'd be getting a D4 instead!

cost not a factor?
then I'd settle on the D800. The FPS is a killer for me as I really do not want to go less than 5. But everything else outweighs the D600 and I still have my D300 for 6 fps when needed.

When you see people say things like this, you should immediately disregard them as a worthy source and find information from another location/person.
