Hi everyone!

Im a bit of a noob when it comes to photography, I am in my first semester of school for it so Im slowly learning but Im no where even close to knowledgeable.
So anyways, I came across the whole reverse lens mounting technique and I was very interested in it since im really interested in macro photography but dont really have the money to spend on macro lenses yet.
SO heres my problem: I have a canon 50mm 1.8 on the camera, with the kit 18-55 on it, and its working great, the only problem is that for some reason Im getting the fisheye effect of having my image be a circle and black around it. I have both of the apertures open as wide as theyll go so Im not sure what Im doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! big_smile

i think that's just the nature of the beast.  i've dabbled and it's really a pain in the ass.  the dof is so small at those distances.  i don't do photoshop but the focus stacking stuff seems really cool, you'd need a focusing rack or a still subject though.  best to use some flash, i think i used a homemade card diffuser for this one.  i don't think you have the same problems with an extension ring so that might be a better route.  g'luck

50 on the camera and 18-55 reversed? try swapping them and try setting the 18-55 at different focal lengths, or you could get a cheap chinese reversing ring and mount either one on it's own, or you could get a scratched, fungus damaged auto-aperture teleconverter and unscrew the glass to turn it into an extension tube.

Tried it out of curiosity and yes, it truly is a PITA. You have to meter manually, focus is by closest distance only and from what I was able to get, the images were a bit soft and hazy. Not to say that you can't get some interesting results and the cost is almost nothing (I only paid about $12 plus shipping for the adapater) but if you're seriously into macro then go ahead and pony up the dough for an honest to george macro lens. Truth be told, the used market is a great place to look for "yesterday's trash". If you look hard enough you can find a good one for 200ish on places like KEH.com or Adorama/B&H.

FYI all of us were noobs at one point. Just keep asking questions and never stop shooting. Good luck!

I made my own reverse lens mount and I didn't have the problem you have. Maybe your adaptor is too long.
